November Bonus Review: The Gits
A minor band doc becomes an accidentally powerful victim-impact statement
the true crime that's worth your time
The crime
On July 7, 1993, Mia Zapata — lead singer of the titular Gits, an influential Seattle punk band — was murdered on her way home from a music venue. The killer left her body in the middle of a street; the case went unsolved for over a decade*. In the wake of Zapata’s killing, bandmates and friends struggled to make sense of both the random violence that ended her life, and the artistic and charismatic space she left behind.
*The disposition of the case is not a secret, but should you wish to avoid spoilers, skip to the final graf.
