Plus: Sarah Weinman on why she does what she does
the true crime that's worth your time
Marya E. Gates started what we continue to call Noirvember back in 2010, and the idea is simple: As October is to scary movies, the following month is to film noir films, she explained on TCM in 2016. Some people set a goal of a noir film a day — bless you if you can do it! Others just use it as a way to catch up and rewatch. Both groups gather online (though in these fractured days of social media, where the gathering goes down is harder to suss out) to chat over properties and share insights.
Best Evidence is joining in the fun thanks to Margaret Howie, who is contributing a weekly review of a noir classic inspired by real-life events all November. Her first installment, on The Sound and the Fury, is below. In addition, we’d love to hear about your noir favorites and how they pair with your interest in true crime, so you know what to do. — EB
