Are multi-level marketing companies a crime? That’s the question LuLaRich, Amazon’s recent docuseries about the family-owned leggings company LuLaRoe, sets out to answer.

The story
And when it comes to LuLaRoe, it determines the answer is yes.

LuLaRoe’s executives argued their company wasn’t a pyramid scheme because it made money through selling a product, not through fees from sales reps. (This claim allows them to avoid the argument made by so many multi-level marketing companies that they’re not pyramid schemes because pyramid schemes are illegal — a tautology that Amanda Montell dismantles in her brilliant book Cultish.)
