July 2022 Bonus Review: Adrienne
"Simultaneously magical and unfair"
the true crime that's worth your time
The crime
On November 1, 2006, Adrienne Shelly — born Adrienne Levine, she took her late father’s name as her working name — was murdered by Diego Pillco, who then staged the scene to look like a suicide. Police were initially content with this conclusion; her husband, Andy Ostroy, was not, and eventually a footprint at the scene was matched to Pillco and Pillco was arrested…
…almost simultaneously with Shelly’s film, Waitress, getting accepted to the Sundance Film Festival.
The story
Adrienne, which premiered on HBO last year, is Ostroy’s love letter to Adrienne, her career, and the films and family left behind/unmade by her murder — and as such it’s difficult to review in the traditional sense.
