Bikram · True Crime Obsessed · New Eden
Plus: Some fetching mug shots
the true crime that's worth your time
A new documentary on alleged sexual predator/yoga guru Bikram Choudhury just dropped on Netflix. This isn’t the first time we’ve talked about Bikram, as Sarah and I discussed the (great) 30 For 30 season on the yogi on The Blotter Presents last March. Multiple victims allege that Choudhury engaged in a pattern of abuse, harassment, and coercion toward women who sought to practice his eponymous brand of yoga, and he’s since fled the U.S.
CNN positively reviewed Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator, which is by veteran documentary director Eva Orner, saying that it is “an especially effective look at how such abuses have been allowed to fester, exploiting protective institutions as well as the allegiance and hunger of those involved.” Since it was just released last night, I haven’t had a chance to watch -- but I think it’s safe to say that it turns up the heat (don’t @ me) on the practice’s controversial leader. You can watch the film here, and listen to Sarah and me discuss the case here. -- EB
