New guide: what Bitcoin actually is (and how it works)

A first-principles walkthrough of Bitcoin, with interactive demos throughout.

Have you ever tried to explain Bitcoin to a curious friend or sceptical family member and struggled to find the right words? You want to suggest your favourite Bitcoin book, but they’re not ready to read an entire book on the subject; you just want an explainer that’s concise, but doesn’t dumb things down for them.

Today I published my attempt to create that resource:

"What is Bitcoin" header image

→ What is Bitcoin and how does it work? ←

It's a first-principles walkthrough - from the double-spend problem to self-custody - with interactive demos throughout:

  • Visualisation of centralised vs decentralised networks

  • A mining lottery you can actually play

  • A key generator that derives valid Bitcoin addresses

  • A sign-and-verify demo showing how ownership is mathematically enforced

  • A UTXO transaction builder

All of it running client-side in your browser, no servers involved.

The guide pulls together a lot of what I've published over the past year - the HD wallets explainer, the proof-of-work guide, the seed phrase deep-dive - and wraps it into a single coherent narrative for someone coming to Bitcoin for the first time.

Feedback very welcome - hit reply.
