Love Letter to Buses

2026-09-07

I’ve been thinking about buses recently, so I made Wayfare, an interactive map derived from open-source public transport datasets. Look at the scale of bus vs non-bus transit — as someone who has spent most of their life in big cities using large-scale metro/rail systems, it’s a stark reminder of how many people in the UK depend on infrastructure that amounts to some guy or girl driving a rinky-dink bus on a schedule.

There are about 82,000 bus drivers in the UK. That's a lot of people working a very unglamorous, very important job. If I didn't have the buses near me that I do in Manchester, I'd be seeing my friends a lot less, so I'm very grateful. (Thank you drivers of the 50 and 192!)
