the mind of benj wesley 06: if i may be candid for a minute, again
if i may be candid for a minute (again)
Luke insisted I come on a hike with him. I hardly know why; it's certainly not the sort of activity I would ever think to engage in on my own. I'm always fickle with my schedule but he got me out on this day. It was a nice view.
Sometimes you go to Sheetz and see a sign in the parking lot and then you're thinking of that Sartre play that your friend Sean was in when you were both college freshmen.
I've been visiting this strip mall more now that I have a car. A vast expanse of parking spaces, surrounded by a bit of store. Truly incredible. What I took out my phone to capture with this picture was infinitely more visible to the naked eye: above one of these storefronts is a design of a circle with horizontal and vertical lines running through it. A secular cross, if you will. Behind it at some distance is a Christian cross mounted above a church. An interesting juxtaposition.
This is a picture of a card in "The Catholic Card Game" (a Roman version of Apples to Apples) I ended up playing at the after-party of a betrothal ceremony for two of my friends. And yet this game have the gall to suggest "Adventures in Odyssey" is a part of Catholic culture. How dare they. Adventures in Odyssey is made by Focus on the flipping Family; you can't take that away from evangelicals.
I don't have any luck with can openers.
I'm not sure why I stopped by the building of the church I attended till I was 9.
The church attended from 10-18 sponsors a missionary to Millersville University; this cookout is their biggest outreach each year. Volunteers come and ask you to fill out a "religious survey" for the chance to win pizza and it's like, how do you think you can go to Heaven? In retrospect, I'm disappointed that the guy administering the survey to me this year just smiled and said "That's right!" when I told him "through faith in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross." I mean, that is right. But the fact that I know what's right doesn't really affect my salvation. The missionary came over while I was taking the quiz. He remembered me from years past and said to the volunteer with me, "This gentleman professes faith, but..."He somehow got distracted and didn't finish the sentence.
Watching the 1995 miniseries Pride and Prejudice on VHS tape on a decades-old TV was something I did because it's an aesthetic I'd like to aspire to.
This is Monica, who is engaged to Sean (the one who starred in No Exit freshman year). (Same couple who had an actual betrothal ceremony.) I ran into her and somehow ended up making pasta in her apartment. One of the more fun times of the semester for me, but I'm sure I could have equally fun times if I ever actually showed up to the communal meals I keep getting invited to.
Empty, innit?
I don't know anything about language. That being said...did they just put random diacritical, etc. marks on these letters to make it look cool?? This isn't my church, by the way. This is just on the path to Sheetz.
I don't have much luck not spilling coffee normally either.
I do not remember this truck, and I do not take pictures while driving. I suppose I made an exception at a red light for this monstrosity, though.
A reminder: there is Only To Do what Is To Be Done.
This is the church I go to. Isn't it pretty?
Some photography by Mitchell Atencio up on my bookshelf. He's got more stuff for sale online here.
Perhaps I should stop in more antique shops randomly.
Same shop. This was in Columbia, PA.
This is back in Millersville. Horrible, isn't it?
I have been emotionally attached to the Triangle Heating & Air radio jingle since I was 10, which is why I photographed their van.
Sorry this isn't rotated. In my last newsletter that had a bunch of pictures, I believe I had photographs of me and Luke and Sean hanging out in a tree. This is that tree now. Someone—no idea who—wrote "Unless" on a rock and placed it in front of the stump, a reference to The Lorax by Dr. Seuss.

Free Lunch Thursday at "The HUB."
Vandalism rules.
Takes a very particular sort of person to have a car like this, I suppose.
Got the tires on my car changed before winter.
I have no idea why I felt compelled to take this picture. Then again, I do like this picture (though I still have no idea why).
The perils of letting your freshly bought milk from Aldi lean against the side door as you open the side door.
This was at York College. I had no compelling reason to be there. These are representations of jellyfish made out of all that nasty plastic stuff you're supposed to recycle to protect the sealife.
Irony.
Be bold. Be brave. Be sweet. This unit not labeled for individual sale.
RESPONSABLE
Honestly felt quite scandalous walking around in such a low-cut shirt.
The Christmas cantata coming together and almost ready for the Sunday performance (which did go very well, thanks for asking).
Is this a renaissance painting? It may look like it, but it's actually just all the people that showed up to Luke's undergraduate thesis defense. The committee accepted it unanimously. Congratulations, Luke!
