July-Aug 2023 Updates
Happy fall!
New Writing
- A new essay on creativity inspired by an essay by Michael Nielsen and the book "Creativity" by John Cleese, which was recommended on the podcast by Mr. Vaden.
- A short-ish essay on Bayesianism. Yes, I know, I thought I was done too.
- An observation that no one seems to take superforecasting seriously.
Links and Recommendations
- Paradice: How randomness can improve your relationship, by Keiran Harris. A fun little essay on using dice rolls to improve decision-making in your romantic relationships.
- I have a complicated feelings towards Ezra Klein. But I'm sympathetic to the liberals focused on growth and abundance (supply-side progressivism). This is a set of people wondering why America can't build anything and trying to change that. Klein and Derek Thompson are writing a book about this movement, which should be good. You can listen to Klein talk about it during his AMA here.
- Tyler Cowen interviews Noam Dworman on standup comedy. How cold should the room be during a show? How close should the audience be to the stage? Are comics happier than the rest of us? How did Tyler's dad know that Bill Cosby was a creep long before the allegations came out?
- An epic (3 hour!) conversation between Joseph Walker and Richard Rhodes on Robert Oppenheimer and the making of the atomic bomb. An excellent companion piece to the recent movie.
- Another epic (4 hour!) soliloquy by Sean Carroll on what people mean when they say fundamental physics is "stuck" and why he disagrees. This cleared up so much for me it's impossible to even begin enumerating the insights.
- Hyrum and Verlan Lewis argue that the political left/right divide doesn't actually make sense.
