High Holiday Learning with Beis Lakish [Beis Lakish Elul 5786 Newsletter]

It’s already Elul and I am, as it goes, completely unprepared! I had hoped this newsletter update would be filled with some Torah in and of itself, but that will have to come in a later edition. Being alive is exhausting, but I’m glad we’re here. For now here are some updates on where to learn & hang out with Beis Lakish over the next couple of months—there’s a lot!

Love and solidarity,
Tzvi (They/them)

Image ID: Orange text is on a textured paper background with a scribbly drawing of mushrooms in a circle. The text reads "Drawing New Traditions: A Rosh HaShanah Talmud Class with Beis Lakish. Lessons from Ḥoni, the Circle Maker. Sunday Sept. 13th from 2 to 6pm Register at tinyurl.com/bl-honi26

Come learn with Olivia & Tzvi at Beis Lakish's Rosh Hashana class, "Drawing New Traditions"! Sunday Sept. 13th from 2 to 6pm ⭕ Register at here! ⭕ We'll be diving into what that magical Ḥoni the Circle Maker has to say about scarcity, abundance, and what to do when the traditions we've inherited don't meet our current material needs. We'll be learning a portion of Taanit 23a in the original Hebrew & Aramaic—but fear not, all you need to know is your Alef Bet! If you need help learning the hebrew alphabet, reach out to tzvi at [email protected]. Beis Lakish classes are always no-cost, and masking while indoors required. This class is part of a series of classes called "Too Much of a Good Thing" being run by the learning communites that make up Ḥarifta: Yeshivas for Liberation. Learn more below!

Distro Events

Imade ID: High-contrast blockprint of a busy New York City street, replete with Jewish life of the 20th century. A child rides by on a bicycle, a man sorts wares in a push cart, women with their children stand outside of a pharmacy counter under signs printed in Yiddish. “EYES EXAMINED”, “PAREVE”, “MASKS REQUIRED!”. In place of the signs are the details for the event: Pittsburgh Jewish Zine Fest 5786, Funds for Gaza Soup Kitchen! Masks required. Stormbringer Press, Talmud Magic, Beis Lakish and more! Ambience by DJ Meddyglyn. FREE ENTRY, Mr. Roboto Project 5106 Penn Ave. 1PM-5PM, Sunday, August 30th. MORE PICKLES THAN PICKLESBURGH! A Circle aleph, a sign of Jewish Anarchy, hangs at the intersection.

Beis Laskish will be distroing zines, the Antizionist Siddur, lots of art, and more at this year’s Jewish Zine Fest! Proceeds from the Beis Lakish & JZF table will be going to the Gaza Soup Kitchen. The fair’s zine this year is bonkers incredible, our tshirts are rad, and there will be so many pickles 🥒. Sunday, August 30 from 1-5pm at Roboto - 5106 Penn Ave, 15224. See you there!
