The Daily Red Flag #033: The casino that isn't a casino
THE SCAM There is a new kind of casino app all over ads and app stores. You never deposit dollars — you buy "Gold Coins," play money. Then the app hands you "Sweeps Coins" as a free bonus, and those can be played on real slot machines and table games, then redeemed for real cash prizes.
It is a casino that legally insists it is not one. The dodge is the dual-currency model: two fake currencies stacked so it counts as a "sweepstakes" instead of gambling. And states are done playing along. This week Wyoming lawmakers voted 6-0 to advance a bill making online sweepstakes casinos a felony, punishable by up to three years in prison. Michigan sent cease-and-desist letters to 33 unlicensed operators, including sweepstakes-style sites. Florida's attorney general sued two big operators and sent letters to Google, Meta, Reddit, Snap, and TikTok, giving them until October 23 to stop running the ads.
THE RED FLAG Because the app calls it play money instead of gambling, the guardrails real casinos live by do not apply. Michigan's regulators spell it out: licensed gambling sites have to check the state's self-exclusion list — people who asked to be locked out. Offshore and sweepstakes-style sites do not check. If you ever self-excluded, you can open an account there in minutes and start depositing.
That is the tell. The fake-money layer makes it feel harmless — no chips, no cashier, just coins you bought "for fun." But the games run the same math as any casino: most of the money flows one way. The free bonus coins are not generosity. They are the starter dose.
THE RULE If it takes real money in and pays real prizes out, treat it like a casino — because it is one. Florida's attorney general said it plainly: "If it looks like a casino, takes real money like a casino, and pays out like a casino, it is a casino."
So decide before you download: how much is this worth to me, and what do I do when it is gone? If you cannot answer the second half, close the app.
