The Daily Red Flag #007: The free bet that isn't free

THE SCAM

The ad is everywhere during the season: "Bet $5, get $150 in bonus bets!" Or the classic: a "risk-free" first bet up to $1,000. It sounds like free money — the bookie is paying YOU to play.

It isn't free. First, you have to spend your own real money to get anything. Then the "bonus" arrives not as cash but as site credits you can't withdraw. And before any winnings can leave the app, you have to clear the wagering requirement — a number buried in the fine print. Say you deposit $50, get a $75 bonus, and the requirement is 10x the combined amount. You now have to place $1,250 worth of bets before a single dollar can come out. Miss the 7-to-30-day deadline and it all evaporates.

There's a sneakier catch some books use: winning "bonus bets" pay only the winnings, not the stake. So if your first real bet loses, the "second chance" bonus bet on a favorite can still leave you underwater — you'd have needed longer odds just to break even on money you thought was free.

THE RED FLAG

The trick is in the word "free." Ohio's gambling rules now say sportsbooks can only call an offer risk-free if it doesn't require you to spend your own money — because these offers always do. And this year the UK Gambling Commission capped wagering requirements at 10x, after books routinely demanded 30x to 50x playthrough before letting anyone withdraw. When regulators have to cap the fine print, the fine print was the product.

Ask the simple question: if this were actually free, why would there be conditions at all? A real freebie doesn't need a deadline, a multiplier, and a rule about which odds count. The offer isn't a gift. It's a leash.

THE RULE

Never claim a betting bonus without reading the terms first — look for three things: the wagering requirement (the "x" number — lower is less punishing, and anything over 10x is brutal), the time limit (often just 7 days), and whether bonus bets return the stake or only the winnings. If the rules are confusing, that's the answer: walk away.

A bonus you can't withdraw isn't a head start, it's a quota. And if you want to see how these offers are engineered to keep you playing, read the House Edge guide: https://erawaeb.com/guides/the-house-edge/
