The Evolution of Madonna

The Evolution of Madonna

By Brian Cunningham

Evolution of Madonna b/w art

When it comes to evolving "looks," Madonna dances in a league of her own.

Hence, she is the newest entry in my "evolution" art pieces, which started with Bruce Springsteen in 2020, continued with Neil Young (2021) and David Bowie (2022), and left off with Prince (2023).

I like a fair share of Madonna's music, but I'm hardly an über-fan. That said, I have to give her enormous credit for constantly evolving to remain relevant for 40 years. Which made her a natural subject for my "evolution" drawings. The prep work alone on this was a wild trip down memory lane.

I could have easily added several more "looks" if I wanted to. (Evita, Erotica and Country Madonna come to mind.)

Appropriately, Madonna made drawing this a lot of fun. Usually I fight with the drawing where it never turns out the way I envisioned, coupled with lots of second guessing. Thankfully, I drew this one digitally using Clip Studio where do-overs are less agonizing. I mostly used the Classic Brush Pen from Retro Supply Co.

While making this, I also stumbled upon this amazing brush by artist Ron Chan for the laces and tassels. It really came in handy! (Thanks, Ron!)

Now the art is in the hands of my coconspirators and collaborators, the amazingly talented and super-fun folks of Hi-Fi Colour and Design. They will make this piece really come alive in ways that never cease to astound me. (In fact, if you need something colored, you should consider hiring them!)

And if you like art of this type enough to want to wear it or drink coffee from a mug with it, go to the bottom of this post to click a link or QR code to the Studio K7 Etsy site. We appreciate your support!
