28 Businesses Win Grants as Inner Sunset's Homegrown Revival Fund Picks Its First Class

SF New Deal announced the winners of the Inner Sunset Neighborhood Vibrancy Fund on Thursday, with an Oakland pizza institution and a new Yemeni café set to fill the neighborhood's most prominent vacancies.

Two long-empty storefronts at the corner of 9th Avenue and Irving Street — arguably the Inner Sunset's busiest intersection — are finally getting new tenants, thanks in part to a $300,000 fund seeded entirely by anonymous local neighbors. The nonprofit SF New Deal announced on Thursday the 28 recipients of the Inner Sunset Neighborhood Vibrancy Fund, a pilot program launched in July that extends the kind of small-business support once reserved for downtown to a residential commercial corridor.

Beloved Burmese Spot Closes on Irving; World-Renowned Naples Pizza Chef Opens Today in Its Place

Inle Burmese Cuisine has shuttered for health reasons after three years in the Inner Sunset, while Vincenzo Capuano — a celebrated Neapolitan pizza maker — opens his first U.S. restaurant at the same address today.

The Inner Sunset's restaurant row saw a significant turn this week. Co-owner Morgan Sue said the closure is an open-ended break while the owners address health issues, and the restaurant may return in some form in the future. Sue and his family immigrated from Burma to the United States in 1998.

Eleven Days Out: What a Yes or No on Prop G Would Actually Mean for the Sunset

With the November 3 vote approaching, the Controller's price tag — nearly $10 million upfront — and a list of park features that would have to be torn out are sharpening the stakes for Sunset and Parkside residents.

For the third time in four years, San Francisco voters will weigh in on the Upper Great Highway when they go to the polls on November 3. Proposition G, placed on the ballot after supporters gathered more than 15,000 valid signatures, would reopen the two-mile stretch of roadway between Lincoln Way and Sloat Boulevard to private vehicles Monday through Friday, while keeping it closed to cars from Friday evening through Monday morning and on holidays.
