Stay Back From the Water: Coastal Flood Advisory and Beach Hazards Statement in Effect at Ocean Beach Through Tuesday
The National Weather Service has issued stacked warnings for the Sunset's coastline — tidal flooding through Tuesday and dangerous surf this weekend.
The National Weather Service issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for San Francisco beginning Friday, October 9, running through 3 p.m. Tuesday, October 13. The agency warns that up to 1.2 feet of inundation above ground level is possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways, with high tides pushing water and waves farther up the beach than normal and potentially cutting off access to some low-lying coastal areas. Layered on top of the flood advisory, NWS added a Beach Hazards Statement running from Saturday morning through Monday afternoon.

Prop G Asks Voters to Reopen Great Highway to Cars on Weekdays — Opponents Say It Would Cost $14 Million and Gut the Park
With mail ballots now going out, San Francisco voters face a November 3 decision on whether to restore weekday vehicle access to the Upper Great Highway.
On November 3, San Francisco voters will decide on Proposition G, a citizen initiative that would reopen the Upper Great Highway to private vehicles from 4 a.m. Monday through 6 p.m. Friday, while keeping the road closed to cars on weekends and holidays. The measure would unwind Proposition K, the 2024 ballot measure that permanently closed the oceanside road and created Sunset Dunes Park. Supporters submitted 15,924 signatures, and on July 23, 2026, the Department of Elections certified that the petition had more than the 10,615 valid signatures required.

562-Unit Safeway Redevelopment Near Ocean Beach Moves Forward Under State Streamlining, Sidelining Public Hearings
State law has removed the project at 850 La Playa Street from the usual Planning Commission process, frustrating neighbors who gathered at a late-September community meeting.
A plan to replace the Safeway at 850 La Playa Street — a 3.3-acre site at the far western edge of the city, one block from Ocean Beach — is proceeding under a state-streamlined approval process that bypasses the standard San Francisco Planning Commission hearing. The Richmond Review/Sunset Beacon reported on October 5 that the Planning Association for the Richmond hosted a community meeting at the end of September at St. John's Presbyterian Church on Lake Street, giving area residents a rare informal forum to weigh in.
