Waymo Wins Statewide Expansion Approval — and Market Street Rideshare Pilot Goes Live

Two milestones in the same week cement San Francisco's role as the proving ground for autonomous vehicles, with new pick-up zones on Market Street and a sweeping CPUC green light for Bay Area-wide service.

The California Public Utilities Commission granted Waymo approval on August 14 to expand its fully driverless ride-hailing service across 18 counties, clearing the company to operate throughout the entire San Francisco Bay Area and to launch new markets in Sacramento and San Diego. The approval covers territory from Sonoma County south to the Mexican border, making it the largest regulatory step in the company's history.

Treasure Island Redevelopment Makes National Headlines as First Residents Move In

A Washington Post feature this week spotlighted new apartments and condominiums now open on the 576-acre former Navy base, marking a turning point for one of the city's longest-running housing projects.

The Washington Post published a major feature on August 21 documenting the arrival of the first wave of residents in new apartments and condominiums on the 576-acre island that the U.S. Navy abandoned nearly 30 years ago. The piece landed as the island's redevelopment reaches a visible milestone: completed buildings, open parks, and an operating ferry terminal.

SF's First Artist Housing Tower Breaks Ground on Mid-Market — City Now Must Define Who Qualifies

The Artists Hub on Market project at 1687 Market Street officially broke ground in late July, but the city is still building the certification process that will decide which San Franciscans can call themselves artists.

San Francisco broke ground on July 28 on the Artists Hub on Market, a 15-story, $140 million mixed-use tower at 1687 Market Street, making it the city's first affordable housing development reserved specifically for artists and arts workers. The project, co-developed by nonprofit Mercy Housing California and Artists Hub on Market — a nonprofit co-founded by SFJazz founder Randall Kline — will deliver 94 permanently affordable apartments alongside rehearsal studios, a black-box theater, office and program space for arts organizations, and a ground-floor café open to the community.
