Grocery Outlet Opens on Bay Street, Ending Three-Year Food Desert

The new discount grocer fills the 30,000-square-foot void left by Safeway's 2023 closure, restoring full-service grocery access to some 20,000 nearby residents.

North Beach and Fisherman's Wharf residents finally have a full-service grocery store again. Grocery Outlet opened August 14 at 350 Bay St. in the NorthPoint Shopping Center, ending a three-year gap created when Safeway shuttered the same location in 2023, saying the store did not meet financial expectations. Mayor Daniel Lurie attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony on opening day. "For many families, food has been difficult without a full-scale grocery store these past three years since the Safeway closed in 2023," Lurie said, according to SFist.

Fisherman's Wharf Forward Construction Wraps Months of Taylor Street Work

The Port of San Francisco's $10 million revitalization project, which has closed sidewalks and lanes along Taylor Street since December, is nearing the end of its first-phase construction timeline.

The Port of San Francisco's ambitious Fisherman's Wharf Forward program — a multi-phase, $10 million effort to revitalize the heart of the city's most visited neighborhood — has been reshaping Taylor Street since late 2025 and is reaching the tail end of its initial construction phase this month. The Port's project page notes that temporary sidewalk and traffic lane closures along Taylor Street between Jefferson Street and the Embarcadero were scheduled to continue through August 2026 while demolition and construction work were underway.

Contested Telegraph Hill Tower at 955 Sansome Remains in Planning Limbo

A proposed 24-story residential tower at the base of Telegraph Hill continues to generate neighborhood opposition years after its original application, with a new SocketSite update flagging activity on the project this month.

The long-running saga of the proposed residential tower at 955 Sansome Street — at the southeast base of Telegraph Hill — is again in the local spotlight. Real estate tracking site SocketSite posted an update on the project on August 13, noting renewed activity on plans for a supersized building on the parking garage parcel, which have grown dramatically since developer Aralon Properties first filed a preliminary assessment in 2021.
