Cesar Chavez Street Set to Become 'Las Campesinas' Under New Ordinance

District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder introduced legislation this week to rename the Mission's main artery, honoring the women of the farmworker movement.

One of the Mission District's most-traveled streets may soon carry a new name. On Tuesday, District 9 Supervisor Jackie Fielder introduced an ordinance at the Board of Supervisors to rename Cesar Chavez Street as 'Las Campesinas' — Spanish for 'female farmworkers.' Supervisors Rafael Mandelman, Shamann Walton, and Myrna Melgar joined as co-sponsors. The legislation still needs to clear committee hearings and a full board vote before going to the mayor.

After Six Years and $37 Million, the Mission Branch Library Is Ready to Come Home

The landmark Carnegie building at 24th and Bartlett will reopen November 14 with a restored entrance, a new teen room, a courtyard, and solar panels — after a renovation that took three times longer than planned.

The Mission Branch Library — the oldest branch in the San Francisco Public Library system, housed in a Carnegie-funded building that opened in 1915 — will reopen on Saturday, November 14, at 1 p.m. after more than six years of closure and a renovation that ultimately cost roughly $37 million. The building at 300 Bartlett Street, on the corner of 24th Street, shut in March 2020. Actual construction did not begin until August 2023, and the project ran approximately a year past its most recent completion target.

A 45-Story Tower Is Proposed for the Mission's Last Car Wash

Developer Manna Capital filed preliminary permits for a 479-foot, 528-unit rental skyscraper at 1601 Mission Street — a triangular lot that has seen ambitious proposals come and go for decades.

Preliminary permits filed October 7 call for a 45-story residential skyscraper at 1601 Mission Street, where the Tower Car Wash occupies a triangular lot near South Van Ness Avenue. Chicago-based developer Manna Capital is the project sponsor. If built, the 479-foot structure would rank among the largest housing projects in San Francisco since the pandemic. The building, designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz, would contain 528 rental apartments across roughly 542,800 square feet of residential space. The unit mix ranges from 114 studios to 20 three-bedroom apartments.
