Ten-Hour Silver Street Standoff Ends in Arrest; Marion City Schools Closed for the Day

A warrant service call on Monday escalated into an overnight armed standoff near Hayes Elementary, forcing the closure of all Marion City Schools on Tuesday.

What began as a routine warrant service call on the evening of Monday, Oct. 5 turned into one of the most serious law-enforcement incidents Marion has seen in years. Officers from the Marion Police Department arrived at a home in the 700 block of Silver Street — less than a block from Hayes Elementary School — to serve an active arrest warrant, and found 64-year-old Harold L. White inside holding a firearm pointed at his own head.

The commission was created after Ohio Auditor of State Keith Faber declared a fiscal emergency for Marion on July 21, 2026, following an analysis that confirmed the city carried a budget deficit of approximately $2.4 million — exceeding the limit allowed under state law.
