Federal Lawsuit Filed to Halt Marina Safeway Tower Over Toxic-Contamination Claims
A newly formed nonprofit and four Marina residents sued San Francisco, PG&E, and developer Align Real Estate in federal court on September 11, demanding a halt to the fast-tracked 848-unit project until environmental reviews are complete.
The long-threatened lawsuit over the Marina Safeway redevelopment became a reality on September 11, when the YesAND Foundation, Neighborhoods United San Francisco, and four Marina District residents filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The suit names the city of San Francisco, its Public Health and Planning departments, PG&E, developer Align Real Estate Partners, and Safeway parent company Albertsons as defendants.

Fleet Week Returns October 4–12: Blue Angels Overhead, City Promises Better Transit After July 4 Failures
San Francisco Fleet Week centers the Marina waterfront again this year, with the city under public pressure to fix the crowd-management failures that stranded spectators after the Fourth of July fireworks.
San Francisco Fleet Week 2026 runs October 4 through 12, with the headline Blue Angels air show over the bay on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, October 9–11, from noon to 4 p.m. The Parade of Ships is scheduled for Friday, October 9, from 11 a.m. to noon, with the reviewing stand at Marina Green. Free ship tours open to the public run October 7–12, excluding Friday the 9th. The event arrives under unusual scrutiny this year.

Cow Hollow
Kaiyō Returns to Cow Hollow as a Nikkei Handroll Bar, Reviving a Storied Union Street Address
Founder John Park reopened 1838 Union Street on September 11 as Kaiyō Handroll Bar, bringing cart-to-table Japanese-Peruvian handrolls and DJ-fueled late nights back to the block where his original restaurant debuted in 2018.
Kaiyō Handroll Bar opened September 11 at 1838 Union Street in Cow Hollow, reviving a familiar address with an entirely new format. The concept offers cart-to-table Nikkei handrolls — rolled fresh tableside by roving chefs — alongside Peruvian comfort dishes including ceviche and lomo saltado, plus a cocktail program built to carry the room well past dinner into late-night DJ sets. The opening is a homecoming for founder John Park, whose Brick by Brick Hospitality Group first launched Kaiyō at the same Union Street storefront in 2018.
