ASNA Chronicles Over a Decade of Community-Funded Tree Planting at Alamo Square Park

A September 30 post by the Alamo Square Neighborhood Association documents the full arc of its 'Trees for Future Generations' reforestation program — more than 147 trees planted, $100,000 raised, and another phase planned through 2028.

The Alamo Square Neighborhood Association published a detailed account of its long-running reforestation program on September 30, tracing the effort from a 2011 horticultural assessment through multiple planting phases that have reshaped the park's urban canopy. The post, titled "Did you know ASNA buys trees for Alamo Square Park?", documents why a neighborhood organization took on work that is typically a city function — and why it plans to keep going.

Hayes Street Is Now Closed Twice a Week — and a Noncompliance Counter Sits at 87 Weeks

With the new Hayes Valley Farmers Market running Saturday mornings alongside the existing Shared Spaces permit, the 400 block of Hayes is car-free on Friday evenings and all day Saturday through at least year-end — and a neighborhood watchdog says permit violations have gone unaddressed for nearly two years.

The SFMTA confirmed in an October 2026 travel advisory that Hayes Street between Gough and Octavia will remain closed to vehicles every Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. and every Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. through the remainder of the year. The agency is rerouting the outbound 6 Hayes/Parnassus Muni line around the area during closure hours, with the advisory page noting updates will continue monthly. The two-layer closure reflects two separate permits operating simultaneously on the same block.

Alamo Scare! Returns October 25 with a New Costume Swap at the Painted Ladies

The Alamo Square Neighborhood Association's annual free Halloween block party is back on Sunday, October 25, with Strange Exchange joining for the first time to host a community costume exchange alongside the traditional trick-or-treat.

The Alamo Square Neighborhood Association announced on September 6 that its Alamo Scare! block party will return on Sunday, October 25, from 4 to 6 p.m., with Steiner Street between Hayes and Grove closed to traffic in front of the Painted Ladies. The free, family-friendly event has grown into one of the neighborhood's most anticipated autumn traditions, drawing hundreds of costumed children and families each year to trick-or-treat at the historic Victorian row houses.
