Powell Street Overhaul Clears Final Hurdle as Public Works Commission Votes to Unlock Construction Phase
The $34 million streetscape rebuild — featuring widened sidewalks, red-brick paving, a golden lantern chandelier, and upgraded cable car stops — is now cleared to break ground along the three blocks from Market Street to Geary Street.
San Francisco's long-anticipated Powell Street Improvement Project moved decisively forward this week after the Public Works Commission took up a contract modification at its October 8 meeting, recommending approval of the construction phase and a budget of $34,153,810 with a 630-calendar-day construction duration. The commission also approved an $800,000 increase to the pre-construction contingency and an additional 60 calendar days of pre-construction time — a procedural step required before contractor Clark Construction Group can formally begin work.

Embarcadero Park Groundbreaking Approaches as Tree Work Wraps Up and Names Are Set in Stone
The five-acre waterfront park combining Embarcadero Plaza and Sue Bierman Park is on track to break ground before year-end; the Sue Bierman Playground is set to reopen October 16 after a two-and-a-half-week tree-removal closure.
The Sue Bierman Playground at Embarcadero Park has been closed since September 28 for tree work tied to the larger Embarcadero Park Renovation Project, and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department says it expects to reopen the playground by Friday, October 16. The temporary closure, announced September 23, was required to safely remove trees immediately surrounding the play structure. Sections of the park and connected pathways have seen intermittent closures and construction noise during this period.
