Did you know nation-state threat actors and cybercriminals alike target small office and home office routers (SOHO)?
The security landscape of the SOHO/consumer router market is poor, with many models from many manufacturers being plagued with vulnerabilities, perhaps due to lack of security-oriented code review or insecure design. Paired with users forgetting/not knowing how/if they should update their router firmware or sometimes continuing to use devices past their “end of life,” and, well… you have a problem (or an opportunity).
Threat actors of all levels take advantage of this, often exploiting vulnerabilities on routers and subsequently recruiting them into botnets for their own uses — that is, pursuing their goals.
This post lays out the landscape of security in SOHO routers and covers why so many threat actors seem to find SOHO routers to be good targets. It also covers some basic mitigations.
Note: Feel free to forward this email to your friends. Perhaps you could save their router from being used as a “shield” by some state-sponsored threat actor. :)
Stay safe out there,
