AI moves onto the building site—with practical questions attached
A fresh TechCrunch interview with former Opendoor chief Eric Wu examines an AI business aimed at people working with their hands. NavigateAI launched in May; the news here is a closer look at its product and business model. Wu describes a construction assistant that uses a smartphone camera, or Meta’s AI glasses, to help workers consult building specifications, manufacturer instructions and company policies while carrying out a job.
Wu says the company is working with Meta on safety certification for glasses used where protective eyewear is required. That remains work in progress in this account. He also describes a sharp adoption divide: younger workers are more receptive, while experienced tradespeople can prefer their own judgement. An assistant only helps if the people doing the job are willing and able to use it.
Newer contracts take a share of savings rather than simply charging for usage, according to the interview. Wu acknowledges that attributing savings to the software is approximate and requires comparisons between divisions. The report also raises an unresolved question about responsibility if advice approves work that later fails. Neither promised savings nor reliable safety outcomes should be treated as established by this interview.
Analysis: The useful test for workplace AI is becoming concrete: can it fit the job, earn experienced workers’ trust and demonstrate a measurable improvement? This is a promising application to watch, with adoption and accountability still central to judging whether it works.
An AI data centre investigation asks who is accountable
An Ars Technica investigation published on 7 September revisits a June fire at the unfinished Lake Mariner data centre in New York. Nobody was hurt. The fresh reporting concerns the responsibilities surrounding a large AI infrastructure project, rather than a new fire. Ars reports that firefighters encountered missing or unusable safety systems and struggled to identify chemicals in the smoke.
The project involves TeraWulf as owner and operator, Fluidstack as the company set to run the centre, Google as a financial backer and Anthropic as a source of computing demand. TeraWulf told Ars it was responsible for operational safety and emergency preparedness. That acknowledgement matters: the presence of several prominent technology companies does not, by itself, tell local residents which organisation handles a particular problem.
The accounts of remediation differ. TeraWulf said it had added safety measures including hydrants and portable safety information after a review. When Ars contacted the fire chief in mid-August, he said he had not seen hydrant work and believed they were still dry. These are attributed, differently timed accounts; the article does not give us a fresh inspection establishing the condition of every safety system this morning.
Analysis: Alongside capacity and investment announcements, watch for named responsibility and independently checkable delivery. This case shows why a company's assurance and a local responder's account both deserve attention. A useful follow-up would establish what has actually been fixed, by whom, and when.
Arm brings AI graphics techniques to mobile gaming
The Verge reports that Xiaomi’s 18 Fold launches in mainland China today with Arm’s Mali G2-Ultra NX graphics processor inside its Xring O3 chip. The wider development is the arrival of dedicated AI graphics acceleration in this mobile GPU. Arm is bringing techniques associated with PC gaming—including image upscaling and generated frames—into a phone platform, with further devices expected later.
Arm claims up to four times the frame rate when its three neural graphics techniques are combined. That is a vendor claim, not a result established here by independent testing. The Verge also cautions that generated frames do not make a game feel proportionately more responsive: some of the displayed images are inserted between rendered frames, and comparable frame-generation approaches can add latency.
Availability is staged. Arm’s Chris Bergey says initial games will mainly use super sampling, with frame generation coming in early 2027 and denoising afterwards. Developers must integrate support; this is not presented as a universal switch that immediately improves every existing game. Arm names Where Winds Meet, Infinity Nikki and Arena Breakout: Infinite as the first supported titles in the report.
Analysis: Better-looking motion is valuable, but the buying question should include responsiveness and the games actually supported. Independent tests of sustained play will be more informative than the biggest frame-rate multiplier in a launch presentation.
Audi pairs a smaller EV with an efficiency pitch
Audi’s new A2 E-tron compact crossover is aimed at Europe, with The Verge reporting a starting price of £32,200. The announcement combines a relatively accessible entry point for an Audi with an emphasis on aerodynamic efficiency. Reported details include flush handles, an enclosed underbody and a drag coefficient of 0.24. These are launch specifications, rather than the results of a road test.
The headline range reaches 401 miles on the European WLTP test cycle, depending on configuration. The report separately gives an efficiency figure of 12.8 kWh per 100 kilometres with the appropriate motor and battery combination. The starting price and highest range should not be read as a promise that the cheapest version delivers every headline specification; the article describes several configurations.
It also introduces bidirectional charging for Audi, according to the report. An outlet in the boot supports powering external equipment, while supplying a home requires a compatible DC wall box. That distinction is useful: the feature depends on equipment beyond the car for the home application, so the presence of bidirectional capability alone does not establish a complete home setup.
Analysis: Efficiency, usable range and price belong in the same comparison. The next useful evidence is the specification and cost of each version, followed by driving tests. For now, this is an interesting compact EV announcement with clearly stated configuration limits.
