the beast is awake!

has it truly been so long....

how’s it going, email friends? oh, what’s that? i haven’t made a post here in over a year ..!? yeah, that seems right. i feel like i’ve been doing nothing at all, but i have actually been doing Stuff and making Things between going to work and sleeping and eating - need to do a recap!

last year, i made a bird calendar and now that calendar is in the homes of at least 60 people! the whole ordeal of making and shipping said calendar was pretty stressful, and i can’t say i want to do it again so soon, but i did draw some damn cool bird illustrations for it. it was very gratifying to know that many people are willing to pay at least $40 for my work. incorporating scenery into my illustrations is not something i’m used to doing, and i had a surprising amount of fun working out the backgrounds!

i’ve also taken up the joy/burden of watching The X-Files from the beginning to the sour end (both movies included, Lone Gunmen spin-off excluded). i have lots of thoughts about not only the quality highs and lows of this show, but the contrast against Twin Peaks, a show that inspired X-Files which i watched all of at roughly the same time and which has a loosely similar trajectory…. more on that another time.

during my 90’s tv time, i’ve been knitting a LOT. finished projects since last winter include: quilt cardigan, scrappy big sweater, stripey romper, tank-top (that i’ve since frogged), fingerless gloves for my boyfriend, two hats, mini tapestry, and my first pair of socks! now i’m working on a long linen stitch wool scarf, and a ribbed tanktop! i love knitting and i will definitely be sharing more when i finish my various projects.

illustrative work has been put on the back burner this year, and i blame self-inflicted pressure to make marketable art for my online store for killing my desire to draw for myself. all the work i put into the bird calendar from like mid-august to the end of the year took up so much of my personal time that i didn’t really do like.. anything else artwise. i do still make the occasional little drawing when i’m feeling it, but most of my energy for fine repetitive wrist motions has been reserved for knitting or playing video games (recently, Fields of Mistria and SOMA - i contain multitudes). here’s a few “finished” “pieces” from the last 12 months:

if you are an enjoyer of my work or just wanna say hi on my guestbook, i made a portfolio website on neocities!! it’s got a lot of my art for the lookin’ at, including scans from my sketchbooks and commission examples that haven’t been shared before!!! coding is tough to learn from scratch and i’m very proud of my website :-) check it out!

i don’t have big plans for this year other than knitting and reading as much as i can. 2025, i’m takin’ it easy B-). i will be posting here when i can, not monthly but at least.. more occasionally than once a year. no promises!!! future post topics may or may not include: my in-depth x-files commentary, knitting updates, and chat about books i’ve been reading! i do post on tumblr and bluesky still - instagram and twitter are dead to me <3. come say hi there, and until then, bye friends!

i hope you enjoyed reading this installment of my newsletter! if you have thoughts to share/questions to ask/fun facts to tell me about, please reach out to me by replying to this email, or messaging me on any of my social media linked on my website at augustcampbellart.com - thank you!
