I missed sharing a newsletter last month which reminded me that I do still want to report on what I’m up to even if I’m not sure how regular that might be at this point. That said, here’s some reportage from last month (there’s a TLDR at the end, if that’s helpful).
ANALOG/VIRTUAL
This part of the update will be more for those who are interested in the internal side of how I’m sharing my work. During March I went pretty minimal on the virtual part of my practice. As someone who mostly makes and documents their work digitally, this shift was not intentional. But I decided to follow intuition into what became much more clarity around the distinction between the private and public aspects of my art practice.
I started documenting my work through audio-visual.journal as a website/newsletter combo about a year ago (happy 1 year celebration<3) and as someone who makes video work, does internet research, and consumes lots of art online/via streaming, it’s been an incredibly virtual workflow. It’s also been pretty insular. I have other parts of my practice that are more physical and social, but I wasn’t as engaged with them over this past year. So, March has ended up being a time to reconsider my capacity, and, to some extent, re-invigorate analog and offline parts of my process. I am now questioning the utility of the newsletter/website combo (mostly the website part, at the moment), but for now this past year of experimenting with it will stay up.
MONTHLY PLAYLIST
As part of paring down the virtual side of my work, I have solidified the fact that the monthly playlist is the heartbeat of audio-visual.journal. For a bit of lore, I started making monthly playlists in 2019 and I legitimately have not missed a month of sharing music ever since. As someone who holds the study of musicality as a core part of their work, I feel like this makes sense. The past couple of months I have also been experimenting with expanding the playlist format, which is now a makeshift radio concept that I’ve started doing on a website that connects thru are.na (note: you do not need an are.na account to listen). That will be how I continue sharing the monthly playlists and my goal is to layer on ways of doing research based on each playlist (we’ll see about working toward that goal in due time). As I mentioned before, the process of how I do work is shifting but one thing I can confidently tell y’all to expect from me is that I will be documenting what music I’m listening to.
ZINE DROP
As part of my more internal explorations this past month, I have been learning about zines. I’m interested in being able to share the visual parts of my work this way. As a step toward that, and toward attempting to have some financial support through my art practice, I have a zine for sale through my page on Ko-fi.
I have taken a curated set of images from some of my recent video art sessions, that serve as sketches for certain aesthetics I’ve been exploring. I’m releasing this under the title “ROUGH CUT” as a reference to me being a video editor (a rough cut is an early draft of a film/video piece that goes on to be edited into a final cut). Because of the experimental nature of my process, these images are just rough ideas bound together by a shared visual style.
I am interested in making more of these, partially depending on if people would actually buy them. This version is an e-zine (electronic zine; formatted for digital viewing), rather than a print one. This makes it easier for me to put the work out there and just start learning from the process of selling things. The zine is priced at a $5 minimum, with a suggestion of $5-$10, and you are welcome to offer more if you’d like. The $5 minimum is based on the lowest suggestion that I currently have for donations through Ko-fi, so if you’ve considered donating in the past, this would be a chance to pay a similar price in exchange for an art work. Additionally, if you’re a zine-maker or zine-reader feel free to respond to this newsletter to let me know about your zines or ones you like to read. I would love to have some recs!
TLDR: Newsletter and website updates may not be too consistent going forward. Monthly playlists will be consistent going forward. Check out my first e-zine, ROUGH CUT 01 via Ko-fi.

Thank you for sharing your time with my work in this corner of the virtual void. 🖤
There are various ways to support the practice of A-V.J, including generously offering one time or recurring financial contributions, and citing the newsletter when sharing something you learned from here.
