120425 / STUDIO REPORTAGE

STUDIO REPORTAGE is a space in audio-visual.journal (that i’m testing out), which drops y’all into the frequencies emitting from my current workflow. here, i plan on sharing updates about this virtual journal and other parts of my art practice. expressed thru one dimension of my research framework,1 “call, listen, respond”2 i’ll gather notes and references for what i’m working on.

CALL / WHAT HAS BEEN CALLING TO ME?

iphone scan3 of a handmade collage showing notes from a work/studio session.
  • revising the entries page for audio-visual.journal

  • defining ‘rest’ and ‘play’ in ways that are relevant to my personal sensibilities4

  • facilitation as creative research

  • conversation as a slow method for processing/research

  • “The Work” (what gets made/done) vs. the work (emotional/relational processing that determines the quality of what you do and how)

  • working in series’s (…? what is the plural of ‘series’? series-es…? seriei? lol)

LISTEN / WHAT MEANS OF LISTENING HAVE I BEEN ENGAGING WITH?

black and white scanned image with hand-written text.
scan of a handwritten note to myself, with lines of text stretching, interrupting, and protruding from each other. the lines read: “a score is a framework for unplanned movement;” “instructions for what to attend to;” “or be preoccupied with;” “a score is a space that generates curiosity;” “a score is a sensation, image, word, set of words, text.” in a square on the top right corner reads “what if tension was a source material?”
  • noticing what’s unique about my (work) context5

  • noticing when i’m not interested in “being productive”6

  • generating movement scores7

  • asking myself “what are the steps to [completing a task]?” and keeping track of what i try out, instead of assuming i know how

  • reverse outlining8

  • support mapping9

RESPOND / IN WHAT WAYS HAVE I BEEN RESPONSIVE?

digital photo of a document with it’s words hidden by either black blocks over black text or white text on the white of the page. only the punctuation is visible.
  • extending my capacity for research through film programming/curation with Blacks of Are.na Cinema Club10

  • creating graphic documentation11 of cover letters for jobs and artist opportunities i’m applying to

  • scheduling time to practice and rehearse writing (rather than only being motivated to write when there’s a deadline)

thanks for being an audience, and stay tuned.

  1. shout out Ayana Zaire Cotton, founder of Seeda School, for helping me express my orientation toward musicality and encouraging me to choose these pillars for a generative framework. and shout out to fellow Seeda School alum, isabetta bleu whose structure for sharing studio updates directly influenced me attempting to try this out. ↩

  2. ‘call and response’ is a Black technology rooted in traditions of musical expression, spirituality, and oral history/storytelling. when i was challenged to adopt a 3 part framework to structure my art practice, i considered how adding the pillar “listen” might help articulate what happens in between calling and responding. this is an active revision aimed to deepen my engagement with the technological form. ↩

  3. shout out to Shanté Honeycutt whose newsletter, “things i collected,“ i’ve been following for some time now. their post “memory digital” is where i found out iphones have a scanning feature. ↩

  4. about a year or so ago i first read kening zhu’s theory of rest-play-work. i’m currently having a new layer of revelation about why these categories are an important way of thinking about how i engage in day-to-day activities. ↩

  5. referencing the use of the word ‘context’ from the GTD (getting things done) method. i only understand it from the framing of this blog post i found that shared advice on how to decide what to do in a particular moment, written by Lawrence Barriner II thru the blog ‘lqb2writes.’ ↩

  6. ibid; i reference this source specifically because it includes a prompt to pause and ask myself if i’d like to be productive. ↩

  7. i am using the term ‘movement’ to describe how i interact between (choreographed) dance, deep listening, and (body-based) improvisation. a ‘score’ is a framework for unplanned movement that appears in each of these forms of study. ↩

  8. i learned about reverse-outlining while working at the writing center for my alma mater. ↩

  9. this is a practice where i mind-map work contexts and tools i frequently engage with, using the “Support” framework from the book Making and Being by Caroline Woolard and Susan Jahoda. ↩

  10. If you’re a Black user of Are.na looking for a way to connect with other Black folks thru the website then come thru to Cinema Club or engage with the BoA page! ↩

  11. i was inspired by photos like this one, made by condensing pieces of writing to just its punctuation. ↩

Thank you for sharing your time with my work in this corner of the virtual void. 🖤
