081826 / STUDIO REPORTAGE

tune in: a report, a request, and a music share!

STUDIO REPORTAGE1 drops y’all into the frequencies emitting from my current workflow. Expressed through one dimension of my research methodology2 (call, listen, respond)3, I’ll gather notes on my work process, share updates about this virtual journal, and report on other parts of my art practice.

Album cover for Matt Martian's Going Normal: a black man with a mustache and beard is wearing a brown fedora. He looks to the camera, as if taking a selfie, with a background of a room with a closet and multiple framed photos. Small white text appears in front of his forehead, it says "going normal" with brackets, in a white sans serif font.
Last month, I was inspired by The Internet’s announcement of a 2027 album release to revisit Matt Martians’ Going Normal. This re-listen solidified that he is my fave solo act of the group.

CALL / What’s been calling to me?

  • Still thinking through processes of publishing overlapping with performance

  • Gravitating toward the desire for this self-publishing practice to have more analog components to it

  • Focusing on ways of setting space as a facilitator

  • More subscribers!

    • If youre willing to, I would appreciate you sharing your fave entry of the journal w/ an artist/cultural worker who would be interested in learning about creative embodiment thru research and self-publishing!

LISTEN / In what ways have I been listening?

  • Generative Writing Exercises:

    • Text Compositions

    • Annotative writing

    • Movement scores

  • Album-length listening

RESPOND / In what ways have I been responsive?

  • ICYMI: Since the last studio report, I shared 1 entry of Listening Journal, 2 entries of Rehearsing Otherwise (071426; 072226), and 1 entry of Reference Materials

  • Curated and hosted a screening of 5x Favela, Agora Por Nos Mesmos (2010) for Blacks of Are.na Cinema Club

  • Virtually attended BlackStar Film Festival

    • this was a goal of mine for this year, so yay!

Thanks for being an audience, and stay tuned,

  1. In a 2018 interview with The Drum, filmmaker Jenn Nkiru mentions ‘reportage’ as the consequence of process and discovery, a sentiment she learned from filmmaker Haile Gerima. I enjoy this use of the term, so I’m invoking it here. ↩

  2. Shout out Ayana Zaire Cotton, founder of Seeda School, for helping me express my orientation toward musicality and encouraging me to choose these pillars for a generative framework. And shout out to fellow Seeda School alum, isabetta bleu whose structure for sharing studio updates directly inspired me to try a ‘studio update’ series. ↩

  3. ‘Call and response’ is a Black technology rooted in traditions of musical expression, spirituality, and oral history/storytelling. When I was challenged to adopt a 3 part framework to structure my art practice, I considered how adding the pillar “listen” might help articulate what happens in between calling and responding. This is an active revision aimed to deepen my engagement with this ancestral form. ↩

Thank you for visiting this corner of the virtual void. 🖤
