App updates for week 3

Apps and updates

Hello, quite bit changelog this week but they were quite interesting so I didn't cut too much out.

The sponsor of this weeks newsletter is screenmemory.app. Full disclosure for new subscribers, this is my own application. I recently refreshed the website with an interactive demo, check it out.

Anyway, let's start with the updates!

WiFi Explorer - Fix WiFi problems

Version: 3.5.1 released on January 18

• Adds support for Huawei AP names.
• Improves error handling when parsing malformed information elements.
• Fixes incorrect wide channel and visualization of Wi-Fi 7 networks using 320 MHz channels.
• Other minor fixes and improvements.

Timing - Track time you spend in each app

Version: 2024.1.1 released on January 16

Introducing the Reminders.app integration! Timing can now show completed reminders on the timeline and
suggest their titles when creating time entries, similar to how it already works for calendar events and phone
calls.

Additional new features and important changes:

- Added a "Notes" field to the project editor. You can use this field to store any information you want to keep about
the project, e.g. a link to the project's website, a list of people involved, or a list of tasks to be completed. Note
that this field will only be shown in the project editor, but nowhere else in the interface.
- Added a "Title or Path" rule, which can match *either- the title *or- the path.
This is useful if you want to match e.g. both the title and the path of an app activity, but don't want to create two separate rules for that.
- Moved the name of the current profile in Safari window titles from the beginning to the end. This reflects where
Chrome puts it, and also makes it easier to read the actual page title without having to scan past the profile name
first. Please note that if you currently have a rule that matches the profile name using a "Title begins with" rule,
you should update that rule to use "Title ends with" instead.
- Timing will now always list all devices in the device filter. Previously, it would only list devices for which
times are available in the currently selected date range.
- Timing will now separate the vertical timeline by device by default. This mirrors the behavior of the horizontal
timeline and should make it easier to see which device an activity belongs to.
- In order for tracking the window title of a few specific apps (such as Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro), Timing
requires a "Screen Recording" permission, even though it only obtains the window title and does not actually record
your screen. To ensure that Timing can properly track these apps, it will now explicitly ask for this permission
without sending a notification first.
- When editing a time entry, the set end date to start of "next time entry" button will now switch to "now" when appropriate.
- The "Activities" screen in "Unified" mode will now show each time entry's notes in addition to its timespan.

Bug fixes and other improvements:

- Slightly improved the performance of applying rules.
- Timing can now more reliably import usage from Screen Time on macOS Sonoma. Please let us know if you are still
experiencing issues with this!
- When an app is presenting a modal window on top of a "regular" window (e.g. Photoshop displaying a filter settings
dialog on top of the main editing window), **Timing will now try to use the title and file path of the "main" window
instead of the modal window.*- This should help allocate time towards the correct activity, unless you actually want to
have the details of the modal window recorded. **If you encounter any issues with this change,
please let us know)!**
- Slightly increased the size of the rule editor in the project editor.
- Added experimental support for **detecting call titles from the "New" Microsoft Teams; please let us know whether
this works for you!**
- Added support for extracting the title of the current email from Superhuman.
- Improved support for tracking WhatsApp conversations on old versions of macOS.
- Minor tracking improvements for Slack.
- Added a few more apps to the call tracking exclusion list.

Changes in Timing 2024.1.1:

- Fixed an issue with uncompleted reminders not showing up in the time entry title suggestion list.
- Hopefully addressed a rare issue where setting up the Reminders integration could not be completed.

BetterTouchTool - Save time with custom actions

Version: 4.375 released on January 17

  • New Trigger: "Focused Window Did Change" in "Automations, Named & Other Triggers" (can be used to trigger actions whenever a new window comes to front)

  • New Trigger: "Clipboard Contents Did Change" in "Automations, Named & Other Triggers" (when combined with the "Run Java Script" action it can be used to e.g. automatically transform copied clipboard content or trigger actions when specific things are copied. See (https://community.folivora.ai/t/clipboard-modification-on-copy-by-regex/34817/3)

  • New Condition Action "If Java Script Returns True", which will execute the actions in the if branch when a given Java Script returns true - otherwise it will execute the actions defined in the else branch.

  • The "Cycle Through Multiple Actions" meta action, now has a reset after delay option.

  • Addded a first preview of the new Cheat Sheet (via new predfined actions "Show Cheat Sheet", "Hide Cheat Sheet", "Toggle Cheat Sheet"). Lots of customizability will be added soon.

  • Fixed issue where middle clicks could sometimes trigger window snapping

  • Fixed some issues with phantom lines appearing when doing Mouse Gestures / Drawings.

  • Fixed some bugs with the integrated window switcher (Predefined action "Show Window Switcher For Current App" and "Show Window Switcher For All Apps")

  • Various bugfixes

  • Advanced: Two new interesting actions that can allow for some new multi-letter keyboard shortcuts: "Start Blocking Keyboard Input" and "End Blocking Keyboard Input". Additionally a new variable in conditional activation groups that allows to test whether BTT is currently blocking keyboard input. This can be quite useful when combined with Key Sequences, because by default Key Sequences pass any input to the system - which can lead to lots of conflicts. If your key sequence first activates keyboard blocking, the system won't receive text input anymore. So for example you can define a Key Sequence ctrl + ctrl to disable keyboard input. Then you can have a second Key Sequence "a + b" (that is only active while keyboard blocking is active via a Conditional Activation Group). Now assign the "End Blocking Keyboard Input" action in addition to your desired action to that a + b Key Sequence.
