Weekly API Evangelist Governance (Guidance)
Let’s give a big Monday shout out to our SDK partner APIMATIC. API Evangelist storytelling occurs because of APIMATIC, and I am thankful to have their support for this ride!
I am heads down helping customers think through their API governance, talking about where API governance should occur, and learning to look at API governance as something that is social rather than just technical.

When it comes to API governance I am all about emulating the best approaches I find out there, and I have to say that the Netherlands government has the most impressive approach to their API governance (guidance)—yes, the country.

Why do you think it is that we perpetuate the narrative around a separation between business and engineering (IT)? As Claire Barrett is always good at reminding me—we are all involved in the business, and there is no outside.

A pragmatic place to start with API governance within any enterprise is when it comes to the overlap between API governance and API security. I spent time this week expanding on how API governance can be used to enforce authentication, with a platform specific example of using AWS API Gateway OpenAPI extensions to guide the API governance rules you develop to automate governance.

I worked to help a customer understand the importance of knowing your API consumers, framed in a way that makes sense to wider API regulatory compliance narrative they are already plugged into—Know Your Customer (KYC). In the age of AI, you will have to know the consumers of your APIs.

One of the rights of passage that the discipline of computer science didn’t experience that the wider realm of science experienced, was a period where you could share your work as poetry—so I wanted to contribute my part with some Spectral poems.

message: I do not need a novel, but share the story of why your API matters so much.
