DOOM and the horror of gameplay memory
https://write.as/kybard/doom-and-gameplay-memory
A write up on an interesting mod for the original Doom, playing and subverting player’s exepectations and muscle memory.
“The exit button might be on the wrong side of the room. The exit might have no visible button to press; the ending peel might trigger before you’ve pushed anything. Or, the exit might be the entrance, in the sense that the entrance door is now the exit or in the sense that the exit might bring you not to a level-end screen but instead to the beginning of this or some other level entirely.
The WAD betrays a fundamental aspect of DOOM’s game design, for the purpose of jarring the player into reconsidering their memory and expectations, and to recognize the feeling of losing both over time.”

Jim Naureckas at FAIR‘s blog on a low down trick employed by many a media institution by the looks of it…
If you want people to think that a country resistant to US leadership is a festering doomscape, just underexpose the hell out of your photographs.

Hollywood Made A Calculated Decision To Stop Making Movies About Labor Unions — And It’s Not Because People Weren’t Watching Them

Walter Chaw, writing at Decider, on the dearth of movies about unions. I implore anyone who hasn’t to go watch Blue Collar.

Lost Illusions: The Untold Story of the Hit Show’s Poisonous Culture
https://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2023/05/lost-tv-show-culture
I love Lost. I’ve mentioned it umpteen times in this newsletter and elsewhere, so this excerpt from Maureen Ryan’s latest book was disappointing to read. The piece details a plethora of bad behaviour by those in charge of the show, behaviour that was mirrored by others in the writer’s room and elsewhere.

A follow on from the last newsletter and the worrying (but not wholly unexpexted if I’m honest) rise of the ‘National Conservative’ movement here on TERF island.
