Antisemitism Watch - 5:21 AM US State Dept. Directs Global Security Push for Jewish Communities Ahead of High Holy Days Antisemitic Slurs Target Congressional Nominee at NYC Protest Tucker Carlson's Rhetoric Evasion Tactics Highlighted

You're listening to Antisemitism Watch, I'm Rachel Adler.

We begin with a significant proactive measure from the United States government. The US State Department has instructed diplomatic missions worldwide to urge host governments to bolster security for Jewish communities. This directive, issued ahead of the High Holy Days, comes amid growing antisemitism and safety concerns. According to a senior US State Department official speaking with the Jerusalem Post, American diplomats are tasked with requesting increased deployment of police, counterterrorism units, or military personnel at synagogues and Jewish community centers. The instructions also call for coordination on security briefings and a method for delivering immediate threat alerts to observant Jews who may not use electronic devices during holidays. This move underscores the global nature of the antisemitism threat, as detailed in instructions sent to US missions.

In New York City, a Democratic congressional nominee was subjected to explicit antisemitic slurs. Brad Lander, identified as a 'liberal Zionist' and the nominee for NY's 10th Congressional district, was heckled with phrases including 'Zionist balls–k' by fellow protesters outside an event. Lander was attempting to join a demonstration against a Hindu-nationalist leader, who had been condemned by Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Video of the incident showed protesters shouting obscenities at Lander and demanding he leave, making it clear his support was unwelcome. Lander himself has expressed criticism of Israel but self-identifies as a liberal Zionist.

Antisemitism Watch - 9:20 PM French man faces charges for antisemitic death threats and glorifying crimes against humanity Michigan Senate candidate apologizes for 'hurt people hurt people' comment amidst party divisions Met Museum under fire for planning to honor designer John Galliano amid rising antisemitism

You're listening to Antisemitism Watch, I'm Rachel Adler.

We begin with disturbing incidents of antisemitic violence and threats. In France, an Irish national faces serious charges, including glorifying crimes against humanity and making conditional death threats, following an altercation with a Jewish couple in a supermarket. According to prosecutor Stéphanie Aouine, the man allegedly made antisemitic remarks and threatened to "put a f***ing bullet in your head." French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that antisemitism must be fought firmly and relentlessly, adding that a suspect has been arrested and will be held accountable. The incident is being investigated, with the suspect facing potential prison time and significant fines. The remarks reportedly began after a discussion about Irish policy towards Israel, according to reporting reviewed for this episode.

Closer to home, in Brooklyn, New York, a man was arrested after allegedly directing violent antisemitic threats at a Jewish man dressed in traditional attire on Kingston Avenue. The NYPD reported the suspect told the victim, "You dirty Jews, your kids are always blocking the street. Next time I see them I will kill them." The incident is being investigated as a bias-motivated crime, with the suspect charged with Aggravated Harassment and Menacing as a Hate Crime, according to the NYPD. These incidents serve as a stark reminder that antisemitism remains a present, local concern. Reporting reviewed for this episode also noted antisemitism occurring at a San Diego Padres baseball game.
