The End of the Year
Well, I missed a couple of months. October was busy with various things, November was…November, I suspect I don’t have to explain that.
I guess I’ll give an end of year wrap-up! Which will be kind of brief—Imperial Radch won the Hugo for Best Series! Which is amazing and wonderful and I am still a bit giddy about that.
My only new publication this year was my collection, Lake of Souls—which btw is out in paperback now, so if you were waiting for the price to go down a bit, now’s the time! The only new work in the book is the title story, which I’m quite proud of and I hope folks enjoy.
In less positive news, for several years there had been an option on the Ancillary trilogy, with the intention of turning it into a TV series. The option was actually exercised, scripts were written, design had started on sets and costumes and props. Roles were being cast. This was under the aegis of someone who I was thrilled to be working with, someone very smart, and very good at what they do, whose work I can almost guarantee you are familiar with. I was super excited.
But this summer, it all collapsed. The greenlight was turned to red. Efforts were made to work around this, but in vain. The person who had intended to make the show was, I think, nearly as disappointed as I was. (I respected this person’s desire to keep their association with the project under wraps until they were ready to announce, and even though those conditions no longer apply, I will continue to respect that unless there’s reason to do otherwise.)
There may be other things on the horizon, and I will tell you if there are, but for now, no TV show.
In better news, I turned in the next novel in the Imperial Radch universe! I thought I’d said so in a newsletter, but I couldn’t find it, so maybe I only said it on Bluesky. The title I’ve given it is Temporal Location, but I’m fairly sure that’s not the title it will have when you get to read it. I like it as a title, but Marketing has firm opinions on the subject of what will appeal to readers, so there will likely be some hashing out to do. But I am eager for you all to be able to read it!
I’ve been playing Planet Crafter’s DLC, Planet Humble, and really enjoying it! Well, I mean, what’s not to enjoy, Planet Crafter is good fun.
I’ve also been playing a lot of Farm Together 2, which has been adding small updates nearly every week and has added mining (!!) and begun to have seasonal events. It remains an improvement in nearly every way over the earlier Farm Together.
And Balatro, of course. It’s very addicting.
I’ve been reading some great stuff, too! I read The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. It’s hard to miss, with Atwood, really.
I read The Tomb of Dragons, by Katherine Addison, and I won’t say more, except that if you’ve read The Witness for the Dead and The Grief of Stones, you will definitely want to read this one.
I read Days of Shattered Faith by Adrian Tchaikovsky and you really ought to give this trilogy a try. This is the third book, the first is City of Last Chances, but dang, read it.
Anyway, that’s what there is this time! I guess I’ll see you all in 2025.
Take care!
Ann
