Happy December!
Well, happy December!
I'm back from teaching at the Wayward Wormhole Workshop, which was held in the Castell de Llaes in Spain. I had a lovely time, the students were amazing, the location was incredible, and now I can say I wrote in a castle! For those of you who are interested, this is the place the workshop was held: https://www.insider.com/spain-vacation-airbnb-castle-diy-restoration-before-after-photos-2023-6
But I'm glad to be back home! Coach Vanburen has recovered well from his surgery--he went from a dog who was blind in one eye to a dog with one eye. The transition was of course not entirely pleasant, but it was for the best, and now things have healed up nicely and he is his usual happy, if anxious, Fitness Coach.
In fiction-related news, I have a short story collection coming out! It's called Lake of Souls and it will be out April 2, 2024. There will be one, brand new story in there, called "Lake of Souls." What a coincidence!!!
Some things I've enjoyed reading lately:
The Death of Sir Martin Malprelate by Adam Roberts
This is a book that will benefit from the reader being familiar with a few other works--fortunately, they're all widely read and many of them familiar even to people who haven't read them. I really enjoyed it a lot.
Venomous Lumpsucker by Ned Beauman
This won the Clarke this year. For good reason. Give it a go.
Asunder by Kerstin Hall
OH WAIT this isn't out until August of 24. Well, I read it and super enjoyed it. Have you read any of Kerstin's work? If not, I suggest starting with The Border Keeper, which I blurbed. Because it was awesome.
I don't need to tell you that I read System Collapse by Martha Wells and highly recommend it, do I? If you haven't read any Murderbot, why not? And you should start with All Systems Red. If you have already had the pleasure of Murderbot's company, I don't need to tell you that System Collapse is more Murderbot awesomeness because you probably already know.
That's really all the news I have right now! I hope that whatever winter holiday(s) you celebrate are warm and wonderful. Take care!
