If you’d like to explore some time periods other than nineteenth-century England, may I suggest ancient Rome? it’s not too late to sign up as an ARC reader for Jenna Bigelow’s forthcoming book, Gladiator’s Embrace. Learn more about the book here!
Show an Affirming Flame
Now, I’d like to share something a little less lighthearted than my usual newsletter content. If you’re only here for the romance, feel free to skip the paragraphs below.
It’s hard to know what to say in our current political moment. Terrible things are happening throughout the world, and I know many of us feel helpless in the face of them. If you’re overwhelmed by the weight of the world, take heart: you are not alone.
On that note, I’m going to conclude this newsletter with a quotation from W.H. Auden’s famous poem about a world at war: “Sept. 1, 1939.” I hope you find some comfort in these memorable words:
Defenceless under the night
Our world in stupor lies;
Yet, dotted everywhere,
Ironic points of light
Flash out wherever the Just
Exchange their messages:
May I, composed like them
Of Eros and of dust,
Beleaguered by the same
Negation and despair,
Show an affirming flame.
