What is a short win? (And how resilience is a long win)
Hello
Have you heard of the term ‘short win’? It’s a phrase coined by Olympian rower, Catherine Bishop.
She’s talking about the short, often empty, high that comes from winning a trophy or a title. A win that may well be secured by brutal training schedules, sacrificed relationships, terrible tolls on health and neglecting so many other life goals.
Trophy wins are short lived and costly but they look like success from the outside.
There’s a parallel here with a way of working that causes burnout. We work in heroically energy consuming ways to achieve goals or ‘be the best’ or even just to keep on going in really difficult circumstances.
And then we are told we are amazing. So when we crash, we feel so bad, even though we know nobody can live or work like that for long.
The long win is slower. Less heroic. Less visibly ‘successful’.
Resilience is the long win. It’s consistently managing our energy, learning and depending on each other. Above all, it’s prioritising our own wellbeing in all that we do.
Resilience demands that we let go of that short win mentality. And praise each other for doing things in a kinder, slower, more sustainable way.
So, I invite you to ponder…
How do you feel about short wins and long wins in your own life?
How would going for the long win change how you live and work?
What ideas about your own success would you like to let go of?
Would love to hear what comes up for you. We'll be exploring that last question on this month's Feel Good Networking walk, as we kick through some autumn leaves. Details below.
