Preparing for the Journey of Lent
Trinity Anglican Church 929 11th St, Marysville, CA
Dear Church,
As Lent approaches, many begin to think about what penitential and fasting practices he or she might adopt. In Holy Scripture, fasting and praying precedes great movements of the spirit (Luke 2:36-38, Acts 14:23, Esther 4:16), so in the church's wisdom, it is good for us to have a periodic season of fasting and prayer, most especially before the great movement of the spirit in the feast of Easter and the season that follows, as well as Advent which precedes Christmas. But that is not all that Lent invites us into.
The 2019 BCP has an invitation said at the start of Lent which says,
"I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent: by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and alms-giving; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word."
"by reading and meditating on God’s holy Word."
