A note on the our recitation of the Nicene Creed:
As I have noted in our worship book:
The phrase “and the Son” (Latin filioque) is not in the original Greek text [of the 381 Nicene-Constantople creed we call the Nicene creed], having been inserted by the Roman church hundreds of years later. This has been an issue dividing the Catholic church [that is, the entire church, East and West], and with our bishop’s recommendation, we are omitting it when using the Renewed Ancient / Ecumenical liturgy.
When it is said in some of our liturgy, such as when included in the 1928 and 1662 Prayer Books, or visiting other parishes, it can be understood as “and through the Son.” (supported by Saints Maximus the Confessor, Gregory, and John Damascene, and the Council for Promoting Christian Unity).
This year is the 1700th anniversary of the first Nicene creed (325), and for theological and ecumenical reasons, I support our Bishop's recommendation that where possible and expedient, we refrain from the filioque. So doing is consistent with the 2019 Prayer Book and the 2013 ACNA College of Bishop's Resolution (2019 BCP page 768). If you have questions about this, please let me know!
Blessings, Fr Jonah+
