Evening Prayer and Study in St John

This Thursday, join us for 6PM Evening Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer. We will be continuing a study of St John's Gospel, focusing on early Christian worship.

Notes for The Feast of St Matthew, September 21

Calling of St Matthew
The Calling of St Matthew (1599 – 1600) by Caravaggio
  • Readings for the Feast of St Matthew: Isaiah 33:13–17; 2 Corinthians 4:1–6; Matthew 9:9–13

    • Our Psalm is Psalm 119:89–96 (from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer: International Edition)

      Psalm 119
    • Collects, feasts, and liturgical colors can be found here: trinity.anglican.center/ordo

    • Lectionary Chart (for our readings) can be found here: trinity.anglican.center/lectionary

  • On the Bidding Prayer in the Traditional Order.

Lately, in the Renewed Ancient Text (which I call the Ecumenical Order), we have been using an alternative form for Prayers of the People—as permitted in the 2019 Book of Common Prayer (p.140)—which is the Bidding Prayer taken from the 1928 BCP.

The last few times we celebrated the traditional liturgy we used this same prayer in its proper, historic place—before the Sermon—and in addition to the Prayer for the Whole State of Christ’s Church. I thought it might add some consistency between the two liturgies we have been using. However, both together makes some of the prayers seem a bit redundant to our modern sensibilities, including my own.

The Bidding Prayer, like the 2019 BCP’s Prayers of the People, has some flexibility; the intent can be adapted. The optional Bidding Prayer can be an opportunity to increase the breadth of our prayers when we celebrate the Traditional 1662 Order.

This Sunday we will use the following as a Bidding Prayer before the Sermon (we will be using the Traditional Order for the feast day):

Bidding Prayer adapted from 1662 p.703
Adapted from 1662 Book of Common Prayer: International Edition, p. 703

The following Sunday (28th) we will be back to the Renewed Ancient / Ecumenical Order.

Other Announcements:

  • Pastoral letter sent on the anniversary of 9/11: Pastoral letter in a time of unrest and violence.

  • We were featured in the latest Forward in Faith North America Newsletter

  • Homily for Holy Cross Day: Exhalation of the Cross

  • Please note this change in Membership Roster & Parish Directory Practices. We will no longer be making available a digital membership directory, and we are requesting you to update your information (again) so that we know what to include in the new hardcopy Parish Directory.

These forms are also available in the back of the church and can be returned to me by email or directly to myself, Jennifer, or our Wardens.

  • Events can be found at trinityanglican.net/#calendar which are added as they are announced.

Blessings,
Fr Jonah +
