Ash Wednesday Tomorrow @ 6PM
Trinity Anglican Church 929 11th St, Marysville, CA
Dear Church,
Reminder Ash Wednesday March 5, @ 6PM
Tomorrow we will have a Prayer Book service to begin Lent, called Ash Wednesday. It will include a litany (responsive prayers), scripture readings, the imposition of Ashes, and reading from the Commination as well as the psalms.
"Lord have Mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee." (Holy Communion, response to the Decalogue)
This will be a reflective, solemn service, with silence, prayer, and meditating on our mortality as well as our sinfulness. Without hedging, it presents to God and to each other our total need for a saviour to redeem us from our ‘pitiful’ state (that is, deserving of pity, or deserving of sympathetic sorrow). In this way we prepare for the great journey of lent as we look forward to celebrating the victory of our great redeemer, Jesus Christ, over sin and death.
All welcome, hope to see you tomorrow!
Today: Shrove Tuesday
Today is Shrove Tuesday. Shrove is from the English word shrive, or receive absolution from confession and penance, after the medieval custom of doing so before Ash Wednesday started.
It was historically the day for using up all of the perishable ingredients that would be fasted from during Lent, which was typically meat, dairy, and luxurious food. Pancakes became the 'food of the day' as people used up the extra Milk, Butter, and Eggs (luxurious food of late).
So! today would be a great day to have pancakes, if you have not already, whether it be breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Probably with bacon.
Blessings,
Fr Jonah+
