Andy's discoveries and musings - Issue #4
Having family and friends in Texas, I’ve spent some time reading about that over the past week. On the “day job” side I’ve also been doing a lot of thinking about authentication, APIs and code documentation and samples.
Longer-form content from me, this week
Links I found interesting
I had to use a VPN to access the Dallas News site (thanks to publishers not wanting to make changes for GDPR in Europe). Pretty shocking results from the deregulation of the energy market in Texas, failure of the grid, and folks choosing the seemingly “cheapest option”.
Interesting speculation here on the possible implications for the gig economy as a result of a Supreme Court ruling that re-categorises some Uber drivers as workers in the UK.
My friend Simon Phipps clarifies the use of “open” when it comes to “open standards” and “open source”.
Scary poor security for cameras and nurseries / childcare in the UK.
This was a great read, it’s mind-blowing that they have built this drone, and I’m going to be watching for news of the missions.
A smattering of tech “quick hits” that caught my eye.
Two musical links this week, first a classic I rediscovered when Apple Music threw it at me during a brief daily walk for some exercise on a rare sunny day here in London. Highly recommend “October Swimmer” and “Snow”, but it’s a good set of tunes overall.
My friend Cindy Alexander has a new album dropping soon, and the first single just came out - lots of energy here!
(ICYMI) a little further back...
