Occasional links - 28.08.2021

Hello,

Hope you had a super week and are raring to get into what seems to be a grey and chilly Bank Holiday weekend here in the UK. If you’re blessed with beautiful sunshine and incredible scenery elsewhere in the world then good for you but please don’t send me pictures.

Here's ten things that might be of interest.

Clever dog
Really quite clever. Also, 40 puppers that want to meet you. And how about a puppy getting a lift on a Goose I hear you say? Well here it is. You are welcome! And a late entry to "dog video of the year" is this one as submitted by my brother from another mother, Chrissy.

Sean Lock and the carrot in a box game
Oh my word this had me in stitches. This collection of clips was also a great look at some of his best moments. Thanks to Matt for the first link and the ensuing YouTube recommendation algorithm wormhole. RIP Sean.

Risk and reward
A fascinating article on what it's like to try and manage changes to a building that is listed yet was designed to be changed and adapted to changing needs...

News that Lloyd’s of London is progressing plans to reshape its Richard Rogers-designed home for a digital age draws attention to something of a paradox. Media coverage, user complaints and institutional discretion have combined over the years to suggest a building unchanged and even unchangeable, yet it was designed to be flexible, the statutory protection afforded by its Grade I listing recognises and even encourages this and it has in fact been modified many times, before, during and after construction. So how might these past decisions help or hinder a new future for the Lloyd’s building?

The whole site is full of fantastic writing on architecture. Bookmarked!

What’s the most underrated material in the modern world?
Concrete. Far more interesting than it sounds, but then I always say that.

Why Are So Many Knowledge Workers Quitting?
A recurring theme here. Thinking about work and our relationship with it.

Pumpers, Dumpers, and Shills: The Skycoin Saga
I have a passing interest in this subject but this neatly illustrates so many of the weird things about crypto in general and tech bro culture.

5 Questions, 1 Designer: Charles Holland
A Charles Holland super fan writes, again.

My advice is very pragmatic really…I think ideas can look after themselves and having them is not the challenge. The real challenge is turning your talent and ideas into something that you get paid for and can keep doing. The things that underpin and enable a creative career are the things that don’t get taught much, things to do with running a small (or even a large business), of finding work, and the right kind of work, of relating to clients and managing relationships. So get some proper advice on those things, read and research that as much as you can. It will help you in being creative and inventive rather than the reverse!

Why are hyperlinks blue?
Because they always have been is the easy answer. Less easy finding out when everyone agreed to do this.

Shazam for birds
And a good write up at The New York Times.

1902 film of the Wuppertal Suspension Railway
But colourised and upscaled. The engineering of this against relatively primitive buildings is really quite beautiful.

Love as always,

Andy x
