Occasional links - 20.12.2021 🎅🏼🎄🛷

Hello,

I had loads of things to post for the last few weeks but sadly just ran out of energy on Friday evenings to do this. I've let you down and I'm sorry. But here we are again for one last link-athon of the year and this time we've got twenty, you heard, TWENTY, links for you to enjoy at your leisure. And yes it's a Monday but just leave it in your inbox until Saturday and you'll get the same effect. Last one of the year as I shut down for festivities and maybe we will be back in the spring.

Enjoying occasional links? How about buying me a decaf coffee to keep me going? Or forwarding the sign up link to a friend?

Japanese cats larking around in drains
It's really quite good. I promise.

An ice cream man’s funeral
It will melt your heart or some other vaguely icecream related pun. Thanks to Jess for the link.

How are you feeling right now?
Drag the slider, receive top tips. Sure it's not a well-funded NHS mental health service, but it might help a bit until that arrives. Original source here.

The man who accidentally started an assassin hiring website
When you started a domain as a joke. Via Wheel, I think.

What Neuroscience Says About Modern Architecture
Not entirely that in-depth but a few interesting ideas about why Corb and the modern movement may have happened.

What does Keanu think of NFTs?
Reasons to love Keanu part 13,654...

One thing I wish every ADHDer knew
Need to keep dipping back into this one. Have covered the idea of productivity a number of times and this is a fascinating thread on the topic. And we all need to stop beating ourselves up over productivity. There's also an excellent Netflix series, The Mind, Explained, and the episode titled "How to focus" which is especially good on this.

Even for neurotypical people, the average brain appears to get about ~3 hours of focus for productive, "high mental energy" work per day.

Just three hours.

Which means we need to redefine what a productive day looks like for all of us.

Productivity guilt
Related to the previous link and some top tips to deal with it.

Mid-century modern architecture & infrastructure featured in various Looney Tunes backgrounds
Yeah, enjoyed this one.

In June I hired a full-time junior with no commercial web development experience at all to work with me
A great thread on hiring and trusting people. And also managers. Swap the term developer for your chosen role/profession and I reckon it would still work.

Half a billion bitcoin lost in the dump
A long-form New Yorker article which is as fascinating as it is frustrating.

Weird things in the sky above Glasgow
Hard to not spoil it but they're beautiful. Do click on this one.

Here's Why Movie Dialogue Has Gotten More Difficult To Understand (And Three Ways To Fix It)
And I just thought I had the subtitles on as I was getting old!

Visingsö Oak Forest
A forest of immensely tall and unusually straight oak trees planted nearly 200 years ago to build naval ships that never came to be.

The "Sleep Loss Epidemic"
Matthew Walker's "Why We Sleep" was one of the most popular and acclaimed wellness books of 2017. There's just one problem: Much of it isn't true. I'm in the process of listening to this so can't guarantee it's all good but so far so good. I'm also a sucker for a post that debunks a commonly held theory. Oh god, I've just got to the bit where he thinks lack of sleep causes ADHD, ASD and dementia. Wild.

Naturally coloured eggs showing the variations produced by different chicken breeds
So many colours! And so so beautiful.

How many flat whites you'll need to skip to save for a [house] deposit
Love it. Yet also depressing. But a great account to follow for map things - more interesting than it sounds.

A fawn and bobcat found in an office, cuddling after a forest fire
Not a dog link but sure is cute.

Ten pieces of advice that have helped me at various times
Largely about writing but all sorts that could help in overcoming procrastination.

I accidentally kicked the back of this guy’s seat and now he won’t stop making faces at me
Your dog link.

And deep breath... we are done! 2021 out, have a great break and see you sometime next year.

Thanks for tuning in.

Love as always,

Andy x
