Occasional links - 11.06.2022

Hello again,

James made me do this.

A collection of things that interested me or somehow aligned with what we've been thinking about and discussing in the studio. You get 11 links this week as a small gift from me to you.

I'm off on holiday for a week to the west coast of Ireland and might find time for another email, you never know.

👋WELCOME TO TESCO👋
I really enjoyed this when it popped up on my Twitter feed, Troy Hawke and his #greetersguild series.
Pure joy!

If you like elephant slides, in Taiwan, then this Instagram account is for you
Via the ever wonderful Present & Correct.

"It's that crazy valley you see on Instagram"
Hadn't heard or seen this before, despite spending an unhealthy amount of time there. A bit more context to it when you look at it on the map. Thanks to Andy Waterman for sending it over.

There are two types of workplace success
I want the company/ product/ team I support to be a success and if that happens I expect to benefit as a result.

I want to personally be successful, irrespective of (and sometimes at the cost of) the company / product / team I support
A really great Twitter thread on leadership, managing people and the workplace in general. Via The Dadavist aka Matt Kilgour.

How I built an AI-powered virtual speed camera
Do you want to detect speeding cars without having an expensive radar gun? Of course you do.
My Dad and Stepmother recently moved to a new house on a busy residential road in the Manchester suburbs. It soon became apparent that speeding was an issue in the local community. This particularly affected their road - which, despite being a 20 MPH, would regularly see people driving in excess of 50MPH.
I hate this so much. We live on a 20mph road which is essentially four lanes wide (two bus lanes) and it's a race track. I get so annoyed by this and all those folks celebrating the introduction of a 20 mph zone. IT'S USELESS WITHOUT ENFORCEMENT! See also cycle lanes and white paint. Eugh.

Building for ADHD will make your product better for everyone
Yeah, still going on about this but I think many of these things could improve the world for all of us.
I’m ashamed to admit that I used to be sceptical of ADHD. Then, I was forced to eat my words when, as an adult, an immediate family member was diagnosed with it.

I started to think about how badly the modern world is designed for people who struggle with focus. Let me show you an example:

Via Ten Things, another really good email newsletter you might like to subscribe to. And an extra ADHD link from Andy Ainger Does having ADHD optimise creativity?

Ray Liotta in ‘Goodfellas’: How the Right Actor Turned the Right Part Into a Classic
One of the true greats sadly now gone. I watch this film once a month and consider it a work of art. The details in this article really add to it all. Might need to register to read this or maybe there's a way around the paywall. The NYT writing is really good though and well worth it.

Piano music to work to and calm one’s mind
A link to my own Tweet. But one which asks for help from the fabulous (at times) Twitter hive mind. The replies are all great and I want to do a blog post summarising them all.
I’ve got through Nils Frahm and the below Spotify playlist. Anyone have suggestions of similar music that is good to work to?
You Really Don’t Need To Work So Much
An article from 2015 in The New Yorker and really resonated. This one in the 'FT edit' app about how technology hadn't made our lives easier or work less was also relevant. You might need to register for a free account or download the app for the FT one. The iOS version can be found here.

Overworking Is Actually Making Your Productivity Paralysis Worse
Well yeah, but hard to break the cycle of over work.

So, a shipment of crickets for the lizard arrived via FedEx today
It was my first time ordering bulk crickets off the internet...
An amazing Twitter thread from 2018 which was brought back to life in a reply to this one. You can read the thread all on one page here.

That's all for now.

Love as always,

Andy x
