Hello,
I know I said I wouldn’t but yet here I am with more nice things for your inbox. I’ve had a load of things left over from last week and have kept away from Twitter and Instagram but still have lots to share. My experiment with a ‘dumb’ phone this week has been amusing in that there’s so much you can’t do with your iPhone - maps, 2 factor authentication, look things up immediately as they come into your head etc. I’m just about over the muscle memory of reaching into my pocket all the time also. Still, it’s been a pleasure to cut off and listen to the sounds of the sea in this
lovely flat we’ve rented and clear the mind.
Enough waffle from me, here’s your links. Now leave me alone with my paper.
The Happiness Lab
I have started listening to this podcast recently and got a lot out of it. It’s quite a joyful thing and a good way of reminding you of what’s actually important. It’s not preachy but a series of stories and interviews which illustrates her point. Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts from. I like mine in
Overcast for iOS. Thanks to
Emma for the recommendation.
You might think more money, a better job, or Instagram-worthy vacations would make you happy. You’re dead wrong. In "The Happiness Lab" podcast, Yale professor Dr Laurie Santos will take you through the latest scientific research and share some surprising and inspiring stories that will forever alter the way you think about happiness.
Terrible Maps
Really amusing Twitter account with some hilarious maps made for lols.
This one of Electricity consumption in Europe in 1507 is particularly good. (I found this last week). It’s a wonderful joke on the number of info graphics that seem to have swamped us in recent years, many of them entirely meaningless.
Covid tales from a south London park bench
I’m a real sucker for a photo essay and this one is really lovely. The full set of images can be seen on the photographers
website.
Cruise ships being dismantled
Also a sucker for industrial imagery whilst being keen too avoid too much
‘ruin porn’ which is a bit problematic. Also why people have to append ‘porn’ to everything... sheds, stairs etc.
East and West Germany
Used different colour temperature lights in their street lights and apparently still visible today.
Cars are literally a waste of space
A highway interchange in Houston, USA vs The Italian city of Sienna (population 30.000). Shocking to see and via the ever fabulous
Jack Thurston of Lost Lanes fame. For the record I’d prefer to spend time in Sienna and really is a must visit city.
Scottish Wikipedia
Sometimes life really is stranger than fiction.
For over six years, one Wikipedia user has written well over 23,000 articles on the Scots Wikipedia and done well over 200,000 edits. The only problem is that AmaryllisGardener isn’t Scottish, they don’t speak Scots, and none of their articles are written in Scots.
Manage your energy, not your time
An absolutely fascinating story of dealing with stress and work with some real world examples. A long article but well worth investing some time in and too many things to quote from this article as really is that good. I’ve been given this by Jane Braiden who has kindly been doing some professional coaching with me and this is one of the topics we discussed.
The core problem with working longer hours is that time is a finite resource. Energy is a different story.
Uncle Roger and egg fried rice
This video took off a few weeks ago and he’s done a load of funny stuff since. Worth a follow on your socials.
Took a pic of the cat lookin out the window and accidentally turned him into some sort of god
Wonderful and joyous.
Oh and a bonus link for this week. Why I started this and the rules for it, a little
blog post.
Have a great weekend!
Love as always,
Andy
