Occasional links - 01.08.2020

Hello,

Yes he's still doing these. And it's now August. How on earth is it August? Ok, that's not important right now. Now read these and get on with your coffee and stay off my lawn.

Concrete skate parks in California
Now repeat after me... not. everything. that. is. concrete. is. brutalist.
Sigh. Really beautiful images though, regardless of that word.

More roads aren't the answer
Induced demand and how you just shouldn't build more roads. Please.

...if there’s anything that traffic engineers have discovered in the last few decades it’s that you can’t build your way out of congestion. It’s the roads themselves that cause traffic.

Non-standard McDonalds
Great Twitter account documenting some weird and wonderful McDonalds the world over. Sometimes to fit in in a heritage way and others just plain odd or experimental. Love it.

An edge over which it is impossible to look
The terrifying bell mouth drain of Ladybower reservoir. Just looking at pictures of it makes me feel pretty sketchy. Via Iréne DB from this Twitter thread.

16 volunteers carried Daisy off Scafell Pike on a stretcher
Daisy is a 55kg St Bernard dog and wasn't able to make it down the mountain. Couple of lovely images in this one. Everyone has probably already seen it, but just in case.

How you use an iPhone if you're visually impaired
Um, there's something in my eye. Quite incredible.

Telegraph row
Probably doesn't mean much to most but this aerial video of a trail in the Surrey Hills I ride a fair bit is really quite beautiful (with the sound off). Might not resonate with others but seems to wonderfully capture the wiggle dance that is mountain biking and the joy that comes from it.

The scourge of hygiene theatre
Really good article on how most of 'we clean our restaurant / gym etc' is meaningless and largely for show. It is largely theatrics, much like our reaction to 9/11 in terms of security.

To some American companies and Florida men, COVID-19 is apparently a war that will be won through antimicrobial blasting, to ensure that pathogens are banished from every square inch of America’s surface area.

But what if this is all just a huge waste of time?

Fear City
Although this isn't quite as detailed as I'd like, this three episode Netflix series on the five families of New York is still a brilliant documentary. Time to watch my favourite film again, Goodfellas. Absolutely love mob / gangster stories.

24 things you might not know about Goodfellas
I told you it was my favourite film and this is a great article.

That's all for this week. Have a great weekend and see you next time.

Love as always,

Andy x
