This week's dispatches from the Ministry of Intrigue

Hello, faithful reader.

We published the following fresh dispatches this week:

Weeknotes for 2024-04-19

April 19, 2024, 12:47 p.m.

Another two week recap!

  • Got back from another work trip to the Netherlands. For some reason the jet lag while I was there was extra brutal this time.
  • Filed my taxes. It… sucked.
  • Added this site to the IndieWeb Webring.
  • In the spirit of the IndieWeb I also added a blogroll to this site. It generates both a HTML and OPML version.
  • Explorers Wanted: Released two new episodes of the podcast.
    • Bethda’s Itch: The crew reunites and looks for new digs.

Watch on YouTube: Bethda»s Itch (Episode 224 Teaser)
    • Luxury at Rosita’s: The crew attempts to avoid capture or worse, and Ezri checks into a hotel.

Watch on YouTube: Luxury at Rosita»s (Episode 225 Teaser)
    • Also experimenting with some new tweaks to how I’m handling production after a helpful chat with a listener. It’ll be a few weeks before listeners will notice any difference due to backlog of episodes, though. I’m pleased with the results I’m already hearing. Thanks, Christian!

  • Shipped some minor updates to django-markov, and refactored django-quotes to use django-markov for all its related functions.
  • Started using mise as a replacement for asdf based on a recommendation from Jeff Triplett. It’s really good! And I don’t have to run asdf reshim after Homebrew anymore. ❤️
  • Started watching Fallout on Amazon Prime. We’re four episodes in and really enjoying it.

Plenty of other organizational things as well, but that’s the meat of it! Will these weeknotes become regular again? Only time will tell!

Quote: Molly White on Generative AI

April 17, 2024, 2:17 p.m.

When I boil it down, I find my feelings about AI are actually pretty similar to my feelings about blockchains: they do a poor job of much of what people try to do with them, they can’t do the things their creators claim they one day might, and many of the things they are well suited to do may not be altogether that beneficial. And while I do think that AI tools are more broadly useful than blockchains, they also come with similarly monstrous costs.

— Molly White, AI isn’t useless. But is it worth it?

And that's it!

Grave dust and falling leaves.
