I wrote a story for Magic: The Gathering??

Hi y’all,

Almost a year ago, I got an email via my website contact form that I felt reasonably sure was some sort of weird scam. Relatedly, I have now written a side story for Magic: The Gathering. It’s called “The Doors of Uthros,” and you can read it or listen to it here.

You don’t need to be familiar with MTG to read it; indeed, as I confessed to the team I talked with, I am not a particular fan of the game. However, one of my brothers is, and I could hardly turn down an opportunity to do something he might think was cool. I had a great time working on the piece and got to flex some writing muscles I rarely use, and I’m very grateful to the MTG team for reaching out and trusting me with a tiny sliver of their world.

Other News

There is a book that I have been dying to shove into the hands of almost everyone I know, but especially those of us who have been trapped in corporate jobs at any stage of our careers. The only problem was that nobody else could read it…UNTIL NOW (well, until soon). A Fae in Finance by my dear friend Juliet Brooks is coming out from Orbit on October 21. It made me laugh out loud nearly constantly and also inspired thoughts of violence about main character Miri’s boss. I suspect I will not be alone in this. Highly recommend pre-ordering wherever you buy your books!

Also, Uncanny is running their yearly Kickstarter right now, and I am extremely excited to be a solicited short story author for them this year! Uncanny has published a lot of short stories I absolutely love and has really shaped how I approach my own writing, so it’s extra cool to be writing something just for them.

Short Story Log

I loved "I Met My Wife in the Woods" by Ash Vale in Heartlines Spec. The prose was wonderful, the vibes were immaculate, and to be honest it felt like it captured something I'm always chasing in my own fiction.

I also really liked "The Octopus Dreams of Personhood" by Hannah Yang in Diabolical Plots. There’s a ton to admire about it on a craft level, but honestly what it boiled down to for me was that this is a story that Gets It about being an adult.

Love,

AnaMaria

P.S. It’s my birthday today. If you feel like it, please support short fiction in some way (donate to a magazine you like, send a writer a comment about something you loved in their work, anything at all) to help me celebrate! <3
