A Most Unreliable Narrator Issue #107 La donna mangia la torta
The woman eats the cake
Welcome to A Most Unreliable Narrator, the slice-of-life newsletter of GenXer around town, Lisa Rabey. I talk about anything and everything with a bit of swears. I’m glad you’re here.
Dear Internet,
It’s later than I have liked to get this out to you. I had grand plans to write and schedule this on Thursday but I started prepping for our trip to see my brother and his fam so I didn’t write a thing. It’s a six hour trip from here to there, which took up most of Friday. Two days later, we do it again and now we are home.
While it’s great to see my brother, I do talk to him every day on his way to work so other than the physicality of the trip, we’re up to date on our lives. I did love seeing my 2.5 yo nephew who was overjoyed at his birthday / xmas presents that have been waiting for him in my brother’s basement for some time now. Kid loves dinos, trains, and building equipment. I got him a book, stuffed dinos, and a t-shirt from the Field Museum in Chicago and this giant Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends thingy which won him over. He called me Aunt Lisa a few times but it’s hard when I’ve only seen him three times in the entirety of his existence, and he doesn’t get that excited to see me on Facetime. I wish I could see them more, but I do with what I can when I have it.
At least he’ll fist bump me.
The big upside for TEH for this trip is that since pot is decriminalized in MI, TEH takes full advantage of it by buying up as many gummies he can legally get when we’re in the state. Without having access for the last few months, he’s been struggling a bit more with his anxiety so this injection of gummies from MI should keep him going until we get to the cabin.
I’ve tried sporadically to get stoned over the years but most of what I’ve taken either by spliff or swallowing has turned me into a paranoid android. One of the gummies we bought this weekend was a 2:1 CBD:THC combo which actually worked quite well for me. No paranoia and I was chill for the rest of the night. It also helped I was drinking. I think. Pure CBD does nothing for me, but the CBD:THC combo seems to work well. I was pretty stoned for most of the night so next time I need to let loose, I’m cutting back to 5mg instead of 10mg and probably lay off the drinking.
Before we left on Friday, I had my appointment with my GP to get my official weigh-in to start tracking my weight for WLS. No, I have not heard back from Norton yet. It’s been a solid two weeks but they said it would be closer 3-4 weeks so time keeps on ticking.
I was not pleased with the result. 332. I’ve gained 12 pounds in the last five to six weeks. I’m not eating 15K extra calories a week so it’s almost all water weight. GP wouldn’t give me water pills because they can be problematic so she’s convinced this will even out eventually as my kidneys will flush everything out. Drink more water. I already drink water all day long! How much more can I possibly drink!?
Eating well remains sporadic so that needs to be reeled back in and has been for the last few weeks. My downfall is savory snacks that I’ll have to get rid of and stick with fruits and hummus. I’m also need to reel back the caffeine train. I drank a ton of coffee at my brother’s and drank a large Coke Slurpee to keep me wide awake on the drive home.
GP also wants me to amp up my work out routine to 3 days a week HIIT and two days a week of cardio. Having an exercise plan is part of the surgery requirements so I’ve got that one in the bag. I guess.
I dumped a lot in 106.5 and I’m feeling a bit better. At least I have that going for me.

SkyMint dispensary.
With locations all over the state, Sky Mint offers delivery in several greater areas of which my brother’s house is in one. We ordered as much as we thought was legal and the goods were delivered in under two hours. For first time buyers, SkyMint packed our bag with chips, Skittles, Starburst, and Reece’s Pieces along with a can of Faygo Rock ‘n Rye. Total stoner munchies.
It’s farm to brain cannabis company, grown right here in Michigan. Highly recommend if you’re in the area.
(Additionally, the closer you get to IN/MI border, the billboards advertise like crazy to direct you to a dispensary in MI since it’s not legal in IN. On our way back, we stopped for something in Coldwater, MI (right on the line) and found three or four dispensaries on the road from the highway. Big money!)
Get vaccinated! Vote in the primaries! Boop a dog’s nose!
