A Most Unreliable Narrator Special Issue #2 May the Fourth Be With You
Wedding #2 is in the books
Welcome to A Most Unreliable Narrator, the slice-of-life newsletter of GenXer around town, Lisa Rabey. I talk about anything and everything with a bit of swears. I’m glad you’re here.
Dear Internet,
13 years after the original day and eight years since we’ve gotten back together, Mr Lisa and I finally did the deed on May 4th.
Friends and family were exuberant for us and it was very kind to see so many good words and wishes, especially from people I haven’t spoken to in years. The world isn’t such a shitty place when there are so many with love in their hearts who genuinely want to see you happy.
The day started out innocuous enough. We did our chores and got ready in the morning. Our neighbors, who I refer to gently as the OAPs, were hosting the wedding for us with the Mrs. OAP as the minister and the Mr. OAP as the photographer. (I loaded up an album on FB with the pictures.)
Mr. Lisa’s parents and aunt attended and they stood as our witnesses. The ceremony was short and to the point, which we wanted. We’ve done this before and didn’t seem necessary to pull out all the stops for a second time. No bouquets (the original one is pressed), no fancy clothes, no big production. Just. Words.
Despite how we felt, Mrs. OAP went above and beyond for us. She decorated their condo in a wedding theme, provided Star Wars accouterments, as well as a cake for us to slice.
But what really got us teary eyed is the ceremony Mrs. OAP wrote for us:
We are gathered here to join Lisa and Mr Lisa, in the spiritual union of marriage. Two exceptional individuals, committing to share a lifetime together. This contract is not to be entered into lightly but thoughtfully and seriously, and with a deep realization of its obligations and responsibilities. Please remember that love, loyalty, and understanding are the foundations of a happy and enduring marriage.
Do you Lisa take Mr. Lisa to be your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, from this day forward as long as you both shall live?
Do you Mr. Lisa take Lisa to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer, from this day forward as long as you both shall live?
The ring, an unbroken circle, represents unending love. As often as either of you look upon these rings, may you be reminded of this moment and the love you have promised to each other.
Mr. Lisa, place the ring on Lisa’s finger and repeat after me,
Lisa I give you this ring as a symbol of my unending love.
Lisa, place the ring on Mr. Lisa’s finger and repeat after me.
Mr. Lisa I give you this ring as a symbol of my unending love.
Lisa and Mr. Lisa, I want to wish you both much love and happiness as once again, you begin your life as man and wife. May you always see and encourage the best in each other. May the challenges life brings your way make your marriage even stronger, and may you always be each other’s best friend and greatest love. Remember to keep lots of laughter in your life and love will never be far behind.
Lisa and Mr. Lisa you have pledged your faith to each other in the company of your family and friends. By the power invested in me by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, I now pronounce you married. You may now kiss the bride.
After the wedding, which you can see ended at 11:52 a.m., Mrs OAP and the witnesses signed the paperwork making it official. Mr. Lisa and I cut the cake, stood for more pictures, and we all left for brunch.
Mr. OAP made the reservations and told the restaurant we were having a wedding party. The restaurant provided free champagne and dessert.
After brunch, we all said goodbye and went our separate ways. Mr. Lisa and I ran some errands, came home, and put our house clothes (shorts and t-shirts) and relaxed for the rest of the day.
Thanks to Mrs. OAP (and Mr. OAP), we couldn’t have had a better day.
The signed paperwork is winging its way to the Secretary of State’s office and so it is official. No turning back now.
(Note: I did not provide pics of Mr. Lisa and me because I cannot stand the way I look. I’ve lost nearly 55 pounds since last July and 35, heading towards 40, since December 27 and I cannot tell the difference. I sent Bad Kitty a pic from pre-surgery and the pic now and she says she can see the difference. Me? No. I’m already having body dysmorphia about our rings because my band fit perfectly last week and bloating and arthritis swells my fingers. But enough about me. I’ll save that for another newsletter.)
P.S. While Mr. Lisa is a Star Wars nerd, we did not pick May 4th for that reason. May 4th was the first available day we could schedule a justice of the peace our first time around and we took it. When we got our Kentucky marriage license, and I was discussing our wedding date, the clerk told us the justices had this week off due to Derby week which is why we got Mrs. OAP to officiate rather than a JoP.
And that, my chums, is the story of my latest wedding day.
